Dune beaches, boatbuilding and festivals give Torreira its distinct character. At Praia da Torreira, the sea and Ria de Aveiro shape the coastal landscape; at Monte Branco, traditional boats and a circular trail take centre stage. There are also events held on different dates and a local fishing tradition associated with eel dishes.

Between the dunes, sea and Ria

Praia da Torreira lies on the coastal strip that separates the Ria de Aveiro from the sea and is framed by a dune landscape. Its location also makes a practical difference to the water sports on offer: the open sea conditions are suitable for surfing, while the calmer waters of the Ria at Praia da Torreira are suitable for sailing and windsurfing. When weighing up activities on the water, you can use the type of water as a guide.

South of the town, on the EN 327, lies Praia do Monte Branco, an estuary beach. Its peaceful setting and easy access make it especially popular with families. There is also a picnic area at this beach. The two named beaches therefore differ in their described features: Praia da Torreira combines dunes with its position between the Ria and the sea, while Monte Branco is described as an estuary beach with a picnic area.

Boatbuilding and a circular trail at Monte Branco

The Estaleiro-Museu do Monte Branco is a reference point for preserving the traditional art of boatbuilding. Master boatbuilder José Rito demonstrates the construction and repair of moliceiros and other traditional boats live. The craft is therefore more than just a tradition: visitors can watch the work on the boats in a demonstration.

The “Percurso Entre a Ria e o Mar” circular trail in Torreira is 9.3 kilometres long, rated easy and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The Estaleiro-Museu da Praia do Monte Branco is suggested as the starting and finishing point. This gives you both a manageable timeframe and a named reference point for planning; the stated duration is approximate.

Festivals and regattas at different times of year

The Romaria de São Paio da Torreira takes place every year around 8 September. It includes moliceiro regattas and sailing bateira races. At night, Rusgas—pilgrim groups carrying musical instruments—also make their way through the streets of Torreira. The festival thus combines races on the water with a nighttime procession through the town.

Another regatta takes place in July: the Moliceiro Regatta of Ria de Aveiro Weekend runs from Torreira to Aveiro. These provide two different dates to keep in mind: the Romaria around 8 September and the Ria de Aveiro Weekend regatta in July. If you are planning your trip around a specific event, check the programme for your travel dates.

Fishing traditions and local dishes

The artisanal fishing tradition at Praia da Torreira is associated with eel in escabeche and eel stew, two dishes characteristic of the area. The connection between fishing and cuisine adds a culinary dimension to the coastal experience: alongside the beach, water sports and boatbuilding, this tradition is also part of Torreira’s local character.
