São João Dos Caldeireiros can be explored through nature observation and religious cultural heritage. The lynx interpretation centre connects views of the landscape with a specific conservation story; the bird route turns the focus to habitats and species. The choir and churches add cultural themes to these perspectives.

Lynx and birdwatching

The Centro de Interpretação e Observatório do Lince-Ibérico opened on 6 March 2020. From there, visitors can look out over the landscape where the first pair of this species was released in Portugal in 2014. The landscape is therefore part of the lynx release story seen from the centre. For travellers interested in the Iberian lynx, this place connects a specific conservation event with its landscape setting.

The Rota de Observação de Aves offers a different perspective on nature. It runs through the freguesias of São João dos Caldeireiros and Alcaria Ruiva in the municipality of Mértola. When it began in 2022, it included ten observation points; this original configuration may have changed since then. The route through the two freguesias and the number of points offer different clues for understanding the route.

Habitats include cereal steppes, steep river valleys, reservoirs and dams. Among the species that can be seen there are the great bustard, lesser kestrel, lapwing and crane. The bird route therefore focuses on both different landscape types and specific species. Unlike the centre, which connects the lynx with the landscape of its release story, the route draws attention to several habitats and bird species.

If you are weighing up the nature experiences for your trip, the two approaches are clearly distinct: the centre provides a focal point around the Iberian lynx, while the bird route presents different habitats and species side by side. This can help you choose based on whether you are more interested in a single species or in the diversity of habitats.

Cultural connections

Culture can also be explored through more than just buildings. The Coral “Os Caldeireiros” de São João choir grew out of a circle of friends from the freguesia of São João dos Caldeireiros. Its origins draw attention to how the group came about, offering a cultural reference point that differs from churches and religious trails.

The Caminhos da Religiosidade invite visitors to discover rural, unpretentious and colourful churches maintained by worshippers. The trails include São João dos Caldeireiros and Alcaria Ruiva. This cultural theme encompasses both the churches’ design and their upkeep by worshippers. The trails and the choir therefore represent different perspectives: religious sites and their maintenance on the one hand, and the formation of a group from a circle of friends on the other.
