São Teotónio: Discover Medronho and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in São Teotónio
São Teotónio offers a range of starting points for a trip where local culture, craft traditions and landscapes all play a part. Medronho production, the Igreja Matriz, the Viola Campaniça, as well as nearby landscapes and named routes, offer different ways to choose where to go. It may help to decide what you want to focus on during your trip: cultural heritage and crafts, a festival in June, or activities on foot and by bike.
The Medronho Tradition and the Museu do Medronho
The Museu do Medronho displays traditional equipment used to make medronho spirit. This includes a clay and stone oven, an oak-wood pestle, earthenware jars, a copper still and wooden fermentation barrels. The equipment gives the subject a concrete focus and brings the production tradition to life through the tools used.
The Museu do Medronho was built in 2002 next to the Quinta da Elsa town park.
Visits are available to groups, schools and other visitors by prior appointment. Arrange a time before you arrive.
Local families also keep the medronho tradition alive: for generations, they have used the fruit of the strawberry tree to make the spirit in São Teotónio. This long-standing practice complements the museum’s equipment with a connection to a family production tradition.
Festival, Music and Local History
The Festival de Mastros is an annual June tradition: it is celebrated throughout the month in São Teotónio. If you want to include the festival in your travel plans, use this time of year as a guide.
The Viola Campaniça adds a musical and craft dimension to the cultural heritage. At the Oficina Viola Campaniça, you can learn how to build and play the Viola Campaniça. Unlike the museum, which displays equipment used to make medronho, the focus here is on learning about an instrument and its musical use.
The Igreja Matriz de São Teotónio dates back to the 16th century and is the town’s most important religious landmark. Its history complements the themes of medronho and instrument-making with a religious connection to local history.
