Vila de Frades brings together the tradition of Talha wine, sacred art, archaeological history, and a landscape of vineyards, olive groves, and Montado. At the Centro Interpretativo do Vinho de Talha, augmented reality illustrates the history of wine from Roman times to the present day. The exhibition takes you from the vine to wine production in the Talhas and on to the tavern. The impressions conveyed there also include the aromas and sounds of the vineyards, local sayings, and Cante. This lets you discover wine not only as a product, but also in the context of its production and cultural significance.

Talha Wine, Events, and Landscapes

Vitifrades celebrates Vila de Frades’ winemaking identity, local traditions, and the region’s cultural heritage every year, usually in December. The program includes tastings of Talha wine straight from local cellars, samples of regional cuisine, and a fair featuring regional products and handicrafts. Dates vary by edition. So if you are planning a trip around the event, check the dates for the edition you intend to attend.

São Martinho na Capital do Vinho de Talha also puts the wine cellars at the center of the program, which includes visits to traditional cellars, wine tourism experiences offered by producers, and wine tastings. Dates and participating producers may vary. The summer Festas em Honra de São Cucufate offer a different focus. Their recurring program combines religious, cultural, and recreational activities; traditionally, it includes a solemn mass and a procession through the streets. The exact festival dates may vary from one edition to another.

The Trilho do Vinho de Talha passes through vineyards, olive groves, and Montado in the parish of Vila de Frades. Its fifth edition included a 12 km run and an 8 km walk; formats may change from one edition to another. The landscape and wine provide a shared theme for the route. If you are considering taking part, check both the route distance and the format offered in the edition in question.

Sacred Art and History

The Igreja Matriz de Vila de Frades was built in the Baroque style between 1696 and 1707. Its high altar is considered one of the finest in the Alentejo region. The Capela de São Brás offers a different artistic impression: its frescoes depict scenes from the life of Jesus, the Holy Family, and saints and angels. The chapel is believed to date back to the 17th century. If you would like to visit the Capela de São Brás, you must request a visit from the Junta de Freguesia de Vila de Frades by calling 284 441 762.

The Roman Villa of São Cucufate was a large agricultural estate used for farming and as the residence of its owner. Wall paintings discovered in the ruins helped place the site on the Route of the Frescoes. Later periods also form part of its history: during the Muslim period, a community of monks lived on the site, and a medieval cemetery for the monks was also discovered behind the villa. These different traces make São Cucufate a place where ancient uses and later history can be considered separately.

The Torre do Relógio also offers a glimpse into the town’s architectural history: it is believed to date back to the 16th century. It is one of the few clocks in Portugal powered by a pendulum and rope. The Igreja da Misericórdia was probably built between the 16th and 17th centuries; its gilded carved altar probably dates from the first half of the 18th century. The church is open during religious festivities, including Easter and the Festas em Honra de São Cucufate. In the center of Praça de 25 de Abril, you will find the Chafariz. It replaced the old pillory and became a symbol of liberal society.

The town’s literary history is associated with Fialho de Almeida: he was born in Vila de Frades on May 7, 1857, and was among the leading scholars of Portuguese literature at the turn of the 20th century. Three marble plaques on the exterior walls of the Casa de Fialho de Almeida recall the history of the house.
