Vila Ruiva offers several ways to plan your trip: local history, published routes, and specific event or seasonal dates. Historical highlights include the frescoes and azulejo tiles of the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Represa, the Igreja Matriz, and Roman structures. There are also several routes and seasonal and recurring events to choose from. You can tailor your stay to heritage, a particular route, or a specific occasion.

Routes around Vila Ruiva

The Rota das Igrejas e Miradouros starts and ends at Praça da República in Vila Ruiva’s Jardim. This means the route has the same starting and ending point. Its name refers to churches and viewpoints; the Jardim provides a clear reference point for planning.

The Via Nascente offers a different perspective. It is a section of the Alentejo and Ribatejo Way of St. James, which passes through Vila Ruiva. The seventh stage runs from Cuba via Vila Ruiva to Alvito, Águas de Peixe and Viana do Alentejo. Here, Vila Ruiva is one of several places named along the stage, while the Rota das Igrejas e Miradouros starts and ends in the Jardim. Conditions on the Via Nascente may change; check the route before travelling.

As another option, the Vila Ruiva municipality publishes the Rota do Canal as a walking and all-terrain cycling route. The information therefore distinguishes between a route with the same start and end point, a stage naming several places, and a route specifically described as suitable for walking and cycling. Which one is right for you depends on the kind of route you are looking for.

Churches, paintings and Roman structures

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Represa dates from the 16th and 17th centuries and combines frescoes with azulejo decoration. It is also included in the Rota do Fresco, a route focused on mural painting. The chapel is therefore notable both for its decorative features and its place on this themed route.

The Igreja Matriz de Vila Ruiva is classified as an imóvel de Interesse Público (a monument of public interest). Its construction is said to have begun in 1523 under Tomás Fernandes, a master builder from Vila Ruiva. Its monument classification and the cautiously worded account of its construction offer different insights into the church.

Near the chapel is the Roman dam of Nossa Senhora da Represa. A massive wall and the remains of a Roman reservoir used for agriculture have survived; the visible section of wall is about 80 metres long. The Roman Bridge over the Ribeira de Odivelas offers another point of reference for local infrastructure: it was part of the connection between Beja and Évora and has 26 arches, separated by round-arched openings.
