If you are interested in archaeological remains, religious architecture and landscapes, Castrelos offers several specific points of interest. Topics range from the remains of an old bridge and fortified settlements to churches, watermills and the river landscape of the Baceiro.

Archaeological traces and early history

Ponte de Castrelos is part of an old route where traces of carts are still visible. The abutments of the bridge, which has since been destroyed, remain. The bridge remains and cart ruts therefore point to different parts of the old route: the crossing over the water and the use of the route by carts.

Cabeço de São João is a fortified archaeological settlement in Castrelos. It is associated with the Iron Age, the Roman period and the Middle Ages. Iron Age settlement is also suspected at other named sites: on the hill known as S. João, also called S. Julião, as well as at Alto de Castrelos. These interpretations come from different authors and should accordingly be understood as conjectures.

An alleged medieval connection also forms part of Castrelos’ early history: some historians identify the early medieval “Villa” of Castrelos with the villa that, according to a document from 988, Múnio Gonçalves is said to have partially donated to the monastery of Lorvão. The wording “is said to have” is important here; this is an occasional historical identification, not a confirmed equivalence.

Churches, mills and accommodation

Igreja de São João Baptista is the parish church of Castrelos and is considered a church of impressive proportions and graceful design. Capela de São Bernardino is classified as an object of interest in religious architecture. Both buildings offer different points of interest if you are interested in the religious architecture of the area.

Moinho do Caniço combines rural tourism accommodation with a restored watermill. The traditional buildings have retained their authenticity. The address is Estrada Nacional 103, km 251, 5300-471 Castrelos. If you are considering this specific accommodation, check availability directly.

Several simple, picturesque watermills are preserved in the parish of Castrelos. They are intended to be protected and restored. Moinho do Caniço is therefore both accommodation and a restored mill; the other mills form part of the wider architectural heritage of the parish.
