Cabanas de Baixo: Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Cabanas de Baixo
For your trip to Cabanas de Baixo, culture, history and nature can each take centre stage. In Torre de Moncorvo, historic routes, museums and buildings explore a range of themes—from Jewish heritage to regional iron mining. There is also a local almond speciality and natural attractions in the surrounding area.
Historic Routes and Buildings
The Rota do PatrimĂłnio HistĂłrico starts at the Loja Interativa de Turismo and passes through the historic centre of Torre de Moncorvo. The Rota dos Judeus also starts there. Along the way, it presents both tangible and intangible Jewish heritage. Both routes start at the same place but focus on different themes: one explores the historic heritage of the town centre, while the other focuses on Jewish history and culture.
The Igreja Matriz de Torre de Moncorvo, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, is another notable historic landmark. It was completed in the early 17th century. Its Renaissance portal features three tiers of Corinthian columns and numerous niches. In Torre de Moncorvo, “Castelo” refers in particular to a rectangular area above Praça Francisco Meireles, bounded by strong granite walls.
Museums and Regional History
The Museu do Castelo de Torre de Moncorvo serves as an interpretive and educational centre for the castle ruins and the archaeological work carried out there. On display are structures, materials and information recovered during archaeological work at the medieval castle, its Alcáçova and the weapons courtyard between 1988 and 2018. This places the finds in context, linking them to the ruins and the research conducted on site.
The Museu do Ferro & da Região de Moncorvo (MFRM) focuses on the region’s archaeological and industrial heritage, its settlements and communities around the Serra do Reboredo and Vale da Vilariça. Iron mining is a particular focus. The Museu de Arte Sacra presents the exhibition “Arte e Fé em Torre de Moncorvo”, featuring works from the collections of the Igreja Matriz and the Igreja da Misericórdia. Its collection comprises 94 items from the Igreja Matriz collection: sculptures, paintings, liturgical vestments and objects, goldsmiths’ work, and printed books. Exhibition details may change; check what is currently on display before visiting.
The Núcleo Museológico da Fotografia do Douro Superior holds photographs dating back to 1894; its entire collection comprises about 100,000 images. The Centro de Estudos Judaicos Maria da Assunção Carqueja e Adriano Vasco Rodrigues presents Jewish history and culture. It consists of two locations: a house on Rua Nova, which tradition holds was once a synagogue, and a house on Avenida Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco, associated with the Inquisition.
The Casa da Roda recreates on its first floor the setting where the “rodeira” and “rodeiro” received children. Another historic complex, comprising a former hospital and the EspĂrito Santo chapel, dates back to a hospital founded in the 16th century that operated there until the early 20th century.
Almonds, Spring and Nature
Amêndoas Cobertas de Moncorvo are made by slowly adding sugar to roasted almonds in a polished copper bowl. Since March 2018, the product has held IGP status. The “Amendoeiras em Flor” initiative takes place in spring and showcases one of the area’s most important crops, as well as this regional speciality. If you would like to plan your trip around the initiative, check the specific dates and programme in advance.
There are two wooden birdwatching hides in the Serra do Reboredo, designed to blend into the natural surroundings so as not to disturb the animals living there. Where the Sabor River flows into the Douro, Praia Fluvial da Foz do Sabor offers opportunities for water sports and leisure activities. These natural attractions offer a different focus from the routes and museums: here, the emphasis is on landscapes, wildlife and activities on the water.
