Edral brings together named road connections with churches, chapels and archaeological sites from different periods. These themes can help you decide what matters most before choosing a hotel.

Getting there and finding your way

The EM 1006 provides access to Edral and connects the village to the EN 308 to the north. To the south, the EM 511 connects Edral with Vilar de Lomba. This distinguishes the northern and southern road connections. When planning your journey, you can start with the connection that best fits your route.

Chapel by the Rabaçal

The Capela de S. Tiago de Ribas lies southeast of Edral’s built-up centre and overlooks the right bank of the Rabaçal River. Two points are key to finding your bearings here: its position southeast of the built-up centre and its relationship to the river. The chapel thus connects a description of the village with its surrounding landscape.

Churches, chapels and cultural heritage

Edral’s cultural heritage includes the Capela de Santa Bárbara and the Fonte Romana do Edral. This brings a named spring into focus alongside the chapels. The Igreja de São Tiago Maior was built in the 17th century and renovated in the 18th century. Its main façade features a bas-relief depicting Saint James as a warrior.

A bas-relief projects only slightly from the background and remains part of the façade’s design rather than standing out as a free-standing figure. At the church, you can therefore encounter both its history of construction and a specific visual motif. Those interested in religious architecture can consider the construction date, renovation and depiction as distinct aspects.

Fortified settlements and archaeological sites

The archaeological sites focus on fortified settlements from different periods. Castelejão de Frades and Castro de Sandim are Iron Age fortified settlements in Edral. Vale Pereiras/Bronceda is also a fortified settlement, dated to either the Roman period or the Iron Age. Comparing the periods is useful: the Iron Age is specified for the first two sites, while Vale Pereiras/Bronceda is associated with either the Roman period or the Iron Age.

The Gruta da Forginha is a mine whose date has not been determined. It adds a different type of archaeological site to the settlement-related themes. This makes it possible to distinguish fortified settlements from a mine as different historical points of interest.

A date to consider when planning your trip

The Festa de Santiago Menor de Ribas is associated with Edral and is listed as taking place on May 1. If the festival is relevant to your plans, check local arrangements and the date in advance.
