A trip to Castelo Branco can focus on nature, regional culture or the city’s history. Geological landscapes and hiking trails sit alongside gardens, museums and Bordado de Castelo Branco embroidery. When looking for a hotel, start by considering the themes you want to include: will your trip be mainly about landscapes and trails, or are you especially interested in crafts and history?

Landscapes, viewpoints and hiking trails

Parque do Barrocal in the municipality of Castelo Branco covers approximately 40 hectares. It is part of the UNESCO Naturtejo Mundial Geopark and the cross-border Tejo|Tajo Internacional Biosphere Reserve. Its geological landscape and seasonal changes in biodiversity give the park its distinctive character, while it is also close to the city centre. The park includes seven viewpoints, geological formations, boardwalks and nature trails, as well as a playground and a birdwatching centre. Several themes come together here: geological features and views, as well as opportunities to observe nature.

Another option for hiking enthusiasts is the PR1 – Rota da Gardunha. The trail starts at the entrance to Louriçal do Campo, at an elevation of 470 metres, and leads to the Ocreza Gorge. There, stone water channels provide access to remote natural pools with crystal-clear water, separated by waterfalls. The gorge is also home to 18 hidden watermills. Parque do Barrocal and the Rota da Gardunha offer different experiences: one focuses on viewpoints, geological formations and nature trails, while the other is a hiking route to a gorge with pools and watermills.

Praia Fluvial do Sesmo is surrounded by hills and valleys characteristic of the Pinhal Interior. Separately, the construction of a weir on the Ribeira de Almaceda created the river bathing area as it is today.

Garden design and embroidery traditions

The rectangular Jardim do Paço Episcopal offers a very different focus. Its main terrace features five pools with distinctive water displays. Other features include Lago das Coroas, Escadaria dos Reis and Escadaria dos Apóstolos. Those interested in gardens and their design will find several named features here that can be explored individually.

Bordado de Castelo Branco embroidery is a lasting symbol of the city and has both artistic and economic significance. Embroidery production is concentrated in the District of Castelo Branco, where craftspeople continue to create specialist embroidery. An exhibition at the Centro de Interpretação do Bordado traces the development of this tradition: from sowing flax and weaving to silkworm rearing and obtaining the raw materials, and on to the history of embroidery, its techniques, historical context and symbolism. The centre also includes a museum, a shop and the Oficina-Escola de Bordado de Castelo Branco. Check the current opening hours before your visit.

Museums, music and regional culture

The Museu Francisco Tavares Proença Júnior in the municipality of Castelo Branco was founded in 1910 by the archaeologist it is named after. The Casa da Memória da Presença Judaica commemorates the history of the Jewish people and of the former Jewish community that lived in the city and contributed significantly to its commercial and economic development. These places explore different historical themes: the museum is associated with its founder, while the house of memory focuses on the history and contribution of the former community.

Musical tradition is also part of the cultural scene. In Lousa, the Viola Beiroa has been used since the 17th century to accompany the Dança das Virgens and the Dança dos Homens. The Museu do Canteiro hosts various temporary exhibitions about stone throughout the year. It also holds the annual Exposição de Presépios during the Christmas season; check the dates before your trip. A folk event in the Beira Baixa region features cultural, musical, sporting, educational and gastronomic activities centred on olive oil, olives and their products.

The Centro de Interpretação Ambiental focuses on Parque Natural do Tejo Internacional. It features 14 interactive exhibits and also offers a virtual journey along the Tejo. Environmental interpretation, crafts, music and history therefore complement the landscape and garden themes, providing further possible focal points for planning your trip.

Getting there and planning your accommodation

Castelo Branco city centre can be reached via the A23, which connects to the A1 at Torres Novas. When looking for a hotel, consider in advance which of the themes mentioned are important for your stay. Nature trails and landscapes, garden design, embroidery or museums may call for different plans. This lets you tailor your search for a hotel in Castelo Branco to your personal travel interests without assuming that the attractions indicate specific features of any particular property.
