Condeixa-A-Nova: Archaeology, History and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Condeixa-A-Nova
A good place to start exploring Condeixa-A-Nova is ConĂmbriga: the excavated ruins reveal a diverse urban layout. The site includes a forum, aqueduct, commercial, industrial and residential quarters, an inn, several baths, an amphitheatre and defensive walls. Together, these offer a picture of life and work, from homes to public buildings. An aqueduct associated with ConĂmbriga can also be placed in its historical and geographical context: it is about 3,550 metres long and ends at the baths south of the ruins.
ConĂmbriga: Buildings and Traces of Time
One particularly striking feature is the House of the Fountains. It preserves a large, landscaped peristyle courtyard, with polychrome mosaics still in situ. Together with the quarters and buildings at the excavation site, this offers different ways to explore the place: from residential life to trade and industry, baths and the amphitheatre. Human presence in ConĂmbriga is attested as early as the Copper Age and Bronze Age.
The National Museum of ConĂmbriga complements this long timespan with a current permanent exhibition. It illustrates the history of the site from the end of the second millennium BC to the 6th century AD. Everyday objects are on display; themes include the forum and domus, trade and religion, as well as the presence of the Suebi and Visigoths. For an overview of the chronology, it is helpful to distinguish the two: the attested early settlement dates back well before the centuries covered by the later part of the exhibition.
The National Museum is open daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm; ticket sales end at 5:15 pm. Check the opening times before your visit. PO.RO.S, a multimedia and virtual museum connected with the site, offers another perspective on ConĂmbriga. It is housed in the former manor house of Quinta de SĂŁo TomĂ©, which is classified as a municipal cultural asset.
Architecture and Local History
Casa dos Arcos also combines visitor information with cultural activities. It houses the Condeixa Tourist Office, an area for exhibiting and selling local products, and a multipurpose room for exhibitions and presentations. The building was inaugurated in 2020 and opened to the public in 2021. The municipality acquired it with the support of community funds in order to restore and rehabilitate it and return it to public use.
In Ega stands the Paço dos Comendadores, a rural manor house in the Manueline style. Its U-shaped layout encloses a central courtyard. The building was constructed in the early years of the 16th century on the site of an old Templar castle; the work is attributed to Marcos Pires. The Igreja Matriz de Ega had already been built by 1162. The Palácio dos Figueiredos marks a different historical period: the Figueiredo family commissioned it in the 17th century. These building histories can be distinguished by their specific dates without assigning them to a single period.
The Casa-Museu Fernando Namora has its own opening hours: Monday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The house is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. If you plan to visit this museum, check the opening hours in advance.
Landscape and Regional Cuisine
The fluviokarst gorge of the Rio dos Mouros lies along the Rota Carmelita. It is four kilometres long and has exceptional botanical value. This gives the gorge a different focus from the archaeological sites and historic buildings: here, the landscape and its botanical value take centre stage. Buses to ConĂmbriga from Coimbra run via the IC 6 on the Condeixa–Tomar route. As timetables can change, check them before travelling.
Local cuisine is also part of Condeixa’s character. A traditional dish is kid roasted in a wood-fired oven, served with roast potatoes and boiled leafy greens. A typical sweet is Escarpiada, made with bread dough, brown sugar, cinnamon and olive oil. Together, these two dishes give a concrete impression of how savoury food and sweet pastries feature in the regional food culture.
