Lavos combines salt-making traditions and the Atlantic coast. The parish church, the Núcleo Museológico do Sal, Praia da Costa de Lavos beach and the PR6 Rota das Salinas reveal different sides of the town and its surroundings. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these themes separately: church art and settlement history are distinct from seasonal salt production or a beach with strong surf. This will help you shape your trip around your interests.

Parish Church and Local History

Lavos parish church is also known as Igreja de Santa Luzia; its name is Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição. It is classified as a Monument of Public Interest (MIP). The present building dates from the 18th century, after natural factors forced the original settlement, which was closer to the sea, to relocate. The church’s construction history is therefore linked to changes in the settlement pattern.

Inside are gilded and polychrome carvings characteristic of the Rococo style of Coimbra. Gilding and multicoloured decoration give the artworks their distinctive character. Together with the history of the settlement’s relocation, they offer a perspective on two different aspects of Lavos: its religious architecture and the town’s development.

Salt Production and Salt Museum

Figueira da Foz sea salt is produced entirely by hand, using traditional techniques, in the geographical context of the municipality of Lavos. This traditional work follows an annual cycle: the salt pans are cleaned and prepared in April and May, and salt is harvested from June to September. The work is therefore not limited to the summer months; spring preparation is also part of salt production.

Another way to explore the subject is the Núcleo Museológico do Sal, which opened on 17 August 2007. Its purpose is to interpret, enhance and present evidence of the centuries-old relationship between people and the salt-marsh area of the municipality of Figueira da Foz. Its five-part programme covers salt and salt in nature, the history of salt in Portugal, salt technology and the production cycle in Figueira da Foz, as well as salt pans and nature conservation. The topics range from the substance and its natural occurrence to human use and the natural environment. Those interested in salt-making traditions can distinguish between technical, historical and ecological perspectives.

Beach, Dunes and Circular Route

Praia da Costa de Lavos is located near the small settlement of Costa de Lavos. Surrounded by dunes, the sandy beach has good service facilities and easier access for people with reduced mobility. At the same time, the surf is strong and suitable for surfing; sea conditions vary. When planning a beach activity, therefore, take into account both the facilities and access, as well as changing sea conditions. Check conditions before visiting the beach, especially if you plan to take part in water sports.

For a glimpse of the salt-pan landscape, the 4.6 km circular PR6 Rota das Salinas passes through the Mondego estuary, between centuries-old salt pans and fish-farming ponds. The wetland is designated a Ramsar site because of its ecological characteristics. The PR6 describes the circular route through this landscape; the Ramsar designation applies to the wetland. This distinguishes the route description from the ecological importance of the natural environment.

Another Tradition by the Water

Fishing is also part of the traditional local relationship with the water. In autumn, the people of Lavos fished in fish ponds; at low tide during the full moon, they caught eels by hand, along with other fish. This practice differs from the annual salt-pan work cycle: it is associated with autumn, full-moon tides and hand-catching. Together, the two traditions show different ways of interacting with the local waterscapes.
