Lousã combines marked hiking routes with historic villages and traces of rural industry. The trails differ in their landscapes and themes: they lead, for example, to mills, through protected areas or to viewpoints. Castles, museums and creative attractions also give your trip its own focus. You can choose a route to suit your plans based on the destinations and requirements described for each one.

Hiking trails with different destinations

The Rede de Percursos Pedestres da Lousã comprises ten short hiking routes, covering a total of 61.8 signposted kilometres and approved by the Federação de Campismo e Montanhismo de Portugal. Check trail conditions before setting out. The Rota dos Moinhos on PR1 LSA begins near the Igreja Matriz da Lousã, offers views of the Ribeira das Hortas waterfall and passes through the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Piedade. It also reaches the Fábrica do Papel do Prado, founded in 1716.

Other routes have their own distinctive features. The Rota das Aldeias do Xisto on PR2 LSA begins beside Castelo de Arouce. PR2 LSA – Caminho do Xisto da Lousã connects Castelo da Lousã and Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Piedade with the schist villages of Talasnal and Casal Novo. PR6 LSA – Trilho dos Moleiros follows the Ribeira da Fórnea past several watermills. Their horizontal waterwheels and facilities, which usually consist of a pair of millstones, bring the rural milling tradition to life.

For a different kind of tour, try the Rota do Trevim on PR4 LSA: this challenging route leads to the highest point in the Serra da Lousã and offers sweeping views. The Rota da Levada on PR3 LSA runs within the Rede Natura 2000 and leads to biodiversity refuges in the Serra da Lousã. The Rota Bosques do Catarredor on PR5 LSA is also within the Rede Natura 2000; its features include impressive examples of native forest vegetation.

Schist villages and historic landmarks

Lousã’s five mountain villages in the Aldeias do Xisto network—Candal, Casal Novo, Cerdeira, Chiqueiro and Talasnal—have been documented since the 16th century. In the wider regional context, twelve villages in the Serra da Lousã belong to the network, five of them in the municipality of Lousã. Candal sits amphitheatrically on the slopes of the Serra and is crossed by the Ribeira do Candal. Cerdeira offers international artist residencies, training workshops and small-scale creative activities; these include accommodation, Casa das Artes, a library, a gallery and a community oven.

In the second half of the 11th century, Castelo de Arouce was part of one of the first defensive lines controlling the southern approaches to Coimbra. It was first mentioned in a written record in 1087. PR2 also passes the Central Hidroeléctrica da Ermida, an example of industrial archaeology. Built in 1927, it supplied light to the town and power to the Fábrica de Papel. Places like these show how defence, everyday life and technical infrastructure are reflected in the region’s history.

The Palácio dos Salazares is another architectural landmark, a building of civic architecture in the Pombaline and neoclassical styles. Its portal is topped by a coat of arms. The Museu Etnográfico Dr. Louzã Henriques focuses on Portuguese rural life as it prevailed up to the 1950s and 1960s. The Casa Museu Carlos Reis – Casa da Lagartixa has been restored and enhanced with documentary material and a multimedia interpretation system.

Nature, cycling and swimming

If you are interested in protected landscapes, there are other specific places to explore besides the hiking trails. The Rota À Descoberta da Floresta on PR7 LSA leads to a biodiversity protection area associated with the Rede Natura 2000. Descobrir a Mata do Sobral is an informal 7.6-kilometre walking trail with 20 geocaches, located in the Natura 2000 area at the Sítio Serra da Lousã site. Check whether the geocaches are available before your visit.

The Centro de BTT da Lousã – Aldeias do Xisto offers cross-country (XC), downhill (DH) and enduro (EN) routes. The routes have four designated difficulty levels: green, blue, red and black; these classifications may be updated. For a swim, head to Praia Fluvial Senhora da Piedade in the waters of the Ribeira de São João. Check bathing conditions and seasonal opening before your trip.

Visitor information and getting there

The Museu Municipal Prof. Álvaro Viana de Lemos houses the Aldeias do Xisto Welcome Center. There you can get specialist information about the schist villages, as well as up-to-date visitor information for the area. Check current service conditions before travelling. At Castelo de Arouce, an interpretation and reception centre provides information about the castle and tourist information about the municipality.

The EN 17 connects Lousã with Coimbra; the journey takes a little over 25 minutes, although travel time varies depending on traffic. Lousã is also served by regular public passenger transport services as part of the CIM Região de Coimbra intermunicipal transport system (SIT RC) and the Sistema de Mobilidade do Mondego. For planning, check the current timetables with the operators.

Local cuisine and trip planning

The Festival Gastronómico da Chanfana is part of Lousã’s annual gastronomic calendar. The 2026 edition was the 14th and took place in the 21st year of gastronomic festivals in Lousã. When planning your hotel stay, hiking trails, cultural heritage, museums or the connection to Coimbra can each provide a different focus. Plan your days around trail conditions, seasonal offerings and timetables.
