The visitor route through Montemor-o-Velho Castle is circular and can be started at any point. It also offers insight into medieval building history, churches with distinctive architectural features, the Roteiro Monumental, and water-based and hiking activities. When planning your trip, it is worth considering the different themes and types of route and choosing a focus that suits your plans.

Castle Route and Building History

You can choose where to start the circular castle route based on your interests or plans for your visit. The Paço das Infantas, also known as the Paço Real, is located within the castle and has medieval origins. In the 13th century, it was remodelled by Infanta D. Teresa, a daughter of D. Sancho I. Its origins and remodelling therefore mark different phases in its building history.

The churches also offer specific architectural points of reference. Igreja de Santa Maria da Alcáçova is particularly well preserved and, as a result of alterations, displays Manueline and Renaissance features. Its altarpieces from the 12th and 17th centuries are noteworthy. Igreja de São Martinho is described as a single-nave Gothic church and dated to the 12th century. “Single-nave” describes the floor plan, while “Gothic” refers to the architectural style.

The Roteiro Monumental

The Roteiro Monumental of Montemor-o-Velho marks 23 sites of architectural and cultural heritage with recognised historical and artistic value using information panels. These include sites in the municipality of Montemor-o-Velho. The route therefore encompasses architectural and cultural landmarks beyond individual buildings.

At 13 locations, QR codes provide virtual access to interiors that may not be open to the public at the time of your visit. The 23 marked sites and the 13 locations with QR codes represent different aspects of the Roteiro. Guided tours can be booked for groups of 15 or more; enquire at the municipal tourist office.

Water Activities and Viewpoints

Water activities using pedal boats, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and hydrobikes are available at Parque Ribeirinho de Montemor-o-Velho. The selection offers different ways to enjoy activities on the water. Availability may vary depending on the season and the operator’s arrangements. If you are planning one of these activities, check in advance what is available during your visit.

Paul do Taipal has two observation points offering views across the entire area. They are permanently open for public use. Before visiting, check whether any seasonal restrictions apply. This allows you to include the observation points as a separate aspect of your trip planning without confusing them with the water activities at Parque Ribeirinho.

Circular Route or Long-Distance Hiking Trail

The Grande Rota do Mondego (GR48) is a linear long-distance hiking trail with a total length of 142 kilometres. The section heading towards Coimbra passes through Montemor-o-Velho and runs through the middle of the rice fields of Baixo Mondego. This makes it possible to distinguish the trail as a long-distance route from the circular format of the castle visit.

For your planning, these route types and scales are particularly useful: on the castle visitor route, you can choose your starting point freely, whereas the GR48 is described as a 142-kilometre linear route. The section towards Coimbra also provides a specific connection to Baixo Mondego and its rice-growing areas. If you are considering including a long-distance hiking trail, you can treat this section and the castle visit as different focuses for your trip.
