Avô combines the river landscape along the Rio Alva with a layered local history. Both topics can provide a starting point for planning your trip: would you mainly like to explore the waterways and paths, or focus on the historic buildings? The paths offer direct connections to the river landscape; the buildings date from different historical periods. You can choose the focus of your stay according to your interests.

River Landscape and Paths

Praia Fluvial de Avô lies where the Rio Alva meets the Ribeira de Pomares, forming Ilha do Picoto. The Caminho de Xisto de Avô starts at Largo da Ilha do Picoto and follows the banks of the Rio Alva. The Percurso Pedestre de Avô runs along the river on narrow paths. The route descriptions offer different points of reference when choosing a route: for the Caminho, the named starting point and riverside course are relevant; for the Percurso Pedestre, the narrow paths along the river. You can consider whether a specific starting point or the nature of the path is more important for your plans.

Praia Fluvial de Avô received the Portuguese “Praia + Acessível 2016” award in 2016. An amphibious chair and an amphibious walker are available there for visitors with reduced mobility. Check the seasonal availability of this equipment before your visit.

Historic Buildings and Their Periods

Pelourinho de Avô stands in the square where the former medieval Casa da Câmara was located. Casa de Brás Garcia Mascarenhas was built in the 16th century near the Rio Alva. The two buildings connect to the local history in different ways: the square is the point of reference for the Pelourinho, while the construction date and proximity to the river are relevant to Casa de Brás Garcia Mascarenhas.

Ermida de São Miguel is located within Castelo de Avô; its origins date back to the Middle Ages. Part of the castle walls was reconstructed in 1942. Further work on the enclosure and chapel took place between 1963 and 1966. Thus, the medieval origins of the Ermida sit alongside later interventions on parts of the castle complex.

Igreja Matriz in Avô is dated to the 12th century; it was remodelled in the 18th century. Its timeline differs from the information about the castle: for the church, the original construction date and later remodelling are central, while for Castelo the focus is on the medieval origins of the Ermida and the 20th-century work. Casa de Brás Garcia Mascarenhas also adds to this timeline with its 16th-century construction date. Avô therefore offers various historical points of reference for travellers interested in buildings and their individual histories.
