Penacova: Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Penacova
Near Penacova, the Livraria do Mondego, a natural monument, shapes the landscape along the banks of the Mondego. It was shaped by time over more than 400 million years. The Livraria can be accessed directly via the Estrada Nacional 2. Its long formation history offers a geological timescale that stretches far beyond the history of human construction and monasteries.
Hiking trails with different focuses
The PR 1 – Penacova e o Rio Mondego hiking trail is designed as a discovery route through the area’s cultural, geological, scenic and natural heritage. The PR 4 – Ribeira de Arcos runs mostly through the Ribeira de Arcos valley and passes windmills, watermills and several waterfalls. The trails have clearly distinct focuses: PR 1 highlights four dimensions of heritage, while PR 4 combines a valley route with mills and waterfalls. This gives you a choice between a broad heritage route and a trail with specific landscape features.
Churches, monastery and viewpoint
The Igreja Matriz de Penacova was largely built during a major construction campaign in the second half of the 16th century. The Mosteiro de Lorvão offers a glimpse into an earlier monastic history: Cluniac monks of the Benedictine order founded it in 878. During the reign of Afonso Henriques, the monastery became an important center for producing illuminated manuscripts. The choir stalls in the Igreja do Mosteiro de Lorvão have 102 seats made of rosewood and walnut. Another historic landmark is the Miradouro Emygidio da Silva, inaugurated in 1908. The dates place these sites in different chapters of history: from the monastery’s founding and the production of manuscripts to the construction campaign at the Igreja Matriz.
Palitos and Nevadas de Penacova
The Centro Interpretativo do Palito is divided into eight exhibition rooms. Palito-making originated at the Mosteiro de Lorvão; the nuns initially made them to decorate monastery pastries. This connection between their production and pastry decoration gives palitos a distinctive cultural significance. Nevadas de Penacova offer something different: small cakes with a pastry base, a filling of doce de ovos and a thin layer of white sugar. While palitos are associated with decorating monastery pastries, Nevadas are a type of cake with their own filling and sugar coating.
