Montemor-O-Novo offers a range of themes to help you plan your trip: historic buildings and collections, cave art, cultural events and wine. If you are looking for a hotel in Montemor-O-Novo, deciding what you would like to focus on during your stay can be a good starting point. The places and themes below offer practical guidance.

Castle, Churches and Collections

The monumental complex of Montemor-o-Novo Castle is a tourist attraction and leisure space. The Centro Interpretativo do Castelo is located in the former 14th-century church of SĂŁo Tiago. The NĂşcleo MuseolĂłgico do Convento de SĂŁo Domingos houses an archaeological museum, as well as collections and exhibition spaces devoted to ceramics, sacred art, ethnography and bullfighting. Together, these offer different ways to explore the history and culture of the town.

The Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Visitação is a 16th-century chapel in the Manueline-Mudéjar style. Its 18th-century tile panels depict scenes from the life of Mary. The sacristy contains around 200 votive offerings, including painted retables, photographs, wax representations of body parts, ribbons and two taxidermied animals. The oldest votive offering dates from 1799. The architecture, imagery and votive offerings each bring their own historical perspective.

In the nave of the Igreja e Convento de São Francisco, blue-and-white tile panels depict scenes from the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Convento de São Francisco also reflects the development of Franciscan Observant monasteries in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Igreja e Cripta de São João de Deus has a different connection to religious orders: it was part of a former monastery of the Hospitallers, built to serve as the order’s Portuguese headquarters.

Cave Art and Nature

The Gruta do Escoural preserves Upper Palaeolithic rock paintings and engravings. During the Neolithic, it was used as a necropolis. These two periods make the site noteworthy both for prehistoric art and for its later use as a burial place. Visits must be booked at least 48 hours in advance and are limited to a maximum of ten people. As booking conditions may change, confirm the details before your visit.

The Monfurado area is also important for its natural heritage: it plays a key role in the conservation of various bat species that inhabit the caves of Monfurado. Nature and cultural heritage thus offer different but complementary themes for planning your trip.

Cultural Events and Literary Connections

The Ciclo da Primavera takes place from March to June and has been running for more than 20 years. Across most of the municipalities and localities in the Concelho de Montemor-o-Novo, it features more than 30 multidisciplinary cultural and artistic events. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular event, check the dates of the relevant programme in advance.

The “Levantado do Chão” literary route connects Montemor-o-Novo with Évora and Lisbon. Its literary trails and sights explore historical connections with the work “Levantado do Chão” and the biography of José Saramago, including his time in Lavre. The route is therefore suited to travellers who want to explore places alongside their literary connections.

Wine and Regional Produce

Montemor-o-Novo is part of the Rota dos Vinhos do Alentejo. The wine route introduces wines, vineyards, wineries and the people behind wine production. Quinta da Plansel offers experiences in the vineyards and about winemaking, as well as wine tastings in the Alentejo. Under the name “Wine&Dine”, the quinta also offers menus that pair its wines with local cuisine.

The Queijo de Évora D.O.P. is another part of the region’s identity: the area of the Concelho de Montemor-o-Novo is included in its protected designation of origin. This aged sheep’s milk cheese has a hard or semi-hard, semi-pasty texture. The wine route, tastings and cheese offer different ways to explore local produce and how it is made.
