Albufeira brings together coastal scenery, trails and historic sites with museums, crafts and festival traditions. If you’re looking for a hotel in Albufeira, these different sides of the city can help you plan your trip: would you like to spend most of your time on the coast, explore a circular route or discover the area’s history and culture? The places and experiences below offer concrete ideas to help you decide.

Coast, beaches and views

Praia do Túnel ou Peneco can be reached through a tunnel in the centre of Albufeira. Between Praia da Oura and Praia do Peneco, you can see rock formations shaped by the sea. At the western end of Praia do Peneco, a seaside promenade runs along the coast and ends at Gruta do Xorino. These are different ways to experience the coast: a beach entrance through the tunnel, rock formations along a stretch of coast and a promenade with a named endpoint.

For a different perspective, visit the Jardim Frutuoso da Silva viewpoint. From there, you can see the seafront, the surrounding urban area and part of the coast. If you’d like to get a sense of Albufeira beyond its individual beaches, you can take in the city and the sea together during your stay.

Circular route and connection to the surrounding area

The Percurso do Centro Antigo is an easy 7.1-kilometre circular hiking trail with three variations. It starts and ends at the Posto Municipal de Turismo de Albufeira. The route passes the Torre do Relógio, which the city council describes as a landmark of Albufeira. Its length, circular layout and variations make it a practical way to explore the old town on foot.

The Via Algarviana follows a different kind of route: it connects Albufeira with Alte in the municipality of Loulé over 29.3 kilometres. This gives you a choice between an easy circular trail within Albufeira and a longer route between two places. The routes differ in both their format and length, offering different ways to include hiking in your travel plans.

Old town and cultural history

The Museu Municipal de Arqueologia is located in the old town. Its significant archaeological collection documents human settlement in the area from prehistoric times to the modern era. The museum also organises guided tours tailored to different audiences. It therefore offers an overview spanning long periods of history as well as activities suited to different visitor groups.

The Misericórdia complex is part of the oldest section of the historic centre, within the old fortified area of the city. Its buildings include a hospital, a chapel and a former inn. Capela da Misericórdia was previously an Arab mosque and a chapel for the castle captains; it was restored as a Misericórdia chapel in 1499. The complex’s history makes it a place where several periods and uses come together.

Other buildings also offer different insights into the city’s history. Albufeira’s main church was rebuilt in the late 18th century after the 1755 earthquake. The Church of São Sebastião houses the Museum of Sacred Art, with a collection of religious and artistic works of significant heritage value. The Pintor Samora Barros Gallery is located in the city’s former power station in the historic centre. In the historic quarter, the Church of Sant’Ana overlooks the city and the coast.

Crafts, festivals and experiences at sea

The Centro de Artes e Ofícios de Albufeira has an exhibition space open to the public and offers short creative workshops. Participants can learn basic techniques in a craft. The Empreita workshop provides an introduction to weaving palm leaves and making small items. Dates and availability may change; check the programme if you’d like to include a workshop in your travel plans.

Festas do Pescador celebrate the traditions of the fishing community with a re-enactment of fishing boats arriving at the beach, food, traditional games and music. The festivals serve traditional Algarve dishes associated with the sea, including Xerém with clams and Choquinhos com tinta; menus may vary. Festas do Pescador traditionally take place on the first weekend of September, but specific dates may differ. In the 2026 edition, the programme included the events mentioned; individual elements may vary. Check the dates for the relevant year when planning your trip.

Coastal experiences also include dolphin-watching boat trips, which regularly depart from the Algarve coast. On coastal cave tours in Albufeira, visitors explore rock formations shaped by the sea in small boats. Dolphin watching and cave tours offer different experiences on the water; together with the walking trails and cultural sites, they show the many different ways to spend your time in Albufeira.
