The Castelo de Alcácer do Sal stands on the town’s highest hill. Together with churches, museums and archaeological sites, it gives the trip a historical focus; regional cuisine and activities on the water offer other highlights.

History and Architecture

Beneath the fortress and the former Convento de Aracaelli, the Cripta Arqueológica do Castelo de Alcácer do Sal presents 27 centuries of history in an underground space. The Convento e Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Aracoelli was founded in the 16th century during the reign of D. Sebastião and was used for more than 300 years by Poor Clare nuns of the Order of Saint Clare. The Igreja de Santiago was built in the first quarter of the 18th century.

The architectural history of Torrão can also be read in its individual churches. The Igreja da Misericórdia do Torrão, also known as the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Albergaria, is located in the town’s historic centre. Its construction probably began in the late 15th or early 16th century; its simple façades show Mannerist features. Torrão is a destination in its own right to consider when planning your trip.

The village of Santa Susana has preserved buildings of modernist architecture from the 1940s. Some bear the monogram HF of Henrique Louro Fernandes. A look at these buildings adds another chapter to architectural history alongside the older churches.

Museums, Rice and Regional Cuisine

The Museu Municipal Pedro Nunes was founded on 15 October 1894 and has been housed in the Igreja do Espírito Santo since 1914. Following the floods in February 2026, it is closed indefinitely. If this museum is important to your travel plans, take the closure into account rather than assuming a visit will be possible.

At the Museu Etnográfico do Torrão, a permanent exhibition presents the bread-making cycle; miniature handicrafts depict scenes of rural life. The museum is housed in a former oil mill dating from the late 18th or early 19th century. The Museu do Arroz also combines its subject with industrial history: it is located in a former rice-husking factory dating from 1952 and focuses on rice cultivation and the importance of rice to the history of Herdade da Comporta.

Local cuisine combines bread, olive oil and wine with aromatic herbs, as well as lamb, pork and game. Rice and pine nuts are also part of it, along with asparagus, túbaras and carrasquinhas, which grow wild seasonally. With its exhibition on the bread-making cycle, the Museu Etnográfico do Torrão explores a subject that also features in this culinary tradition.

Wooden Pilings, Routes and Water

The Cais Palafítico da Carrasqueira is built on irregular wooden pilings that serve as a landing stage for fishing boats. Even at low tide, it allows fishermen to reach their boats. The municipality describes the Cais, built in the 1950s and 1960s, as a popular example of vernacular architecture and unique in Europe.

The Rota do Senhor dos Mártires starts at Praça Pedro Nunes in Alcácer do Sal and passes Miradouro de Santa Luzia and Santuário do Senhor dos Mártires.

For water sports, the municipality lists sport fishing, sailing, canoeing and windsurfing at the Albufeira de Vale do Gaio. The Albufeira do Pego do Altar offers tree-lined spots for walks and picnics. The focus differs: at Vale do Gaio, the listed activities on the water take centre stage; at Pego do Altar, walks and breaks in tree-shaded spots are the main attractions.
