Alcoutim between Archaeology and the Guadiana
Accommodation in Alcoutim
Alcoutim brings together archaeological finds, historic buildings and the Guadiana. Its history spans from prehistoric times to more recent local stories. You can choose what to focus on during your stay: museums and architectural history, a walk taking in several sights, or experiences on the river.
Museums spanning archaeology and local history
The NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico de Arqueologia in Alcoutim Castle presents a historical exhibition covering the period from the Neolithic, around 5000 to 3000 BC, to the 20th century. Its special exhibits include 39 complete and fragmentary game boards and 18 small game pieces from the Islamic period. The game boards fall into six types; the collection is considered the largest known assemblage of Islamic game boards and types from a single archaeological site in Portugal.
The Menir do Lavajo offers a glimpse into another early period: the monolith dates from the second half of the 4th millennium BC, around 3500 BC. It is 3.14 metres high and made of greywacke. Its dark grey colour, star-shaped appearance and elliptical cross-section give it a distinctive form. The museum finds and the menhir offer different points of interest: a collection of game boards in one place, and a single prehistoric monolith in another.
The NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico Dr. JoĂŁo Dias features a permanent exhibition dedicated to the life and work of the doctor and surgeon JoĂŁo Francisco Dias. It includes original documents and a documentary film, as well as former consultation and operating rooms, surgical instruments and furniture. The NĂșcleo MuseolĂłgico de Arte Sacra traces Alcoutimâs religious art history from 16th-century Manueline style to 19th-century Neoclassicism. The museums thus bring together archaeological, medical and religious themes.
Buildings and layers of history
Construction of Alcoutim Castle began under King Dinis in the 14th century. The fortress served to defend the border and control trade on the Guadiana. Castelo Velho has several phases of settlement, mostly dating from between the 8th/9th and 12th/13th centuries. The ruins of Montinho das Laranjeiras include archaeological areas from Roman, Visigothic and Islamic times, including the pars fructuaria, the ecclesia and the buyut.
The Igreja Matriz de SĂŁo Salvador is an example of early Renaissance architecture in the Algarve. It was built between 1538 and 1554 on the site of a medieval church. For a perspective on history that goes beyond individual buildings, the NĂșcleo HistĂłrico de Alcoutim offers another approach: the historic centre and the surrounding landscape along the Guadiana serve as an open-air exhibition, inviting you to discover the history, culture, lanes and buildings of the Vila.
On foot and on the Guadiana
The approximately 4 km circular PR3 Os Encantos de Alcoutim trail takes in important sights in the Vila. These include the RuĂnas do Castelo Velho, Castelo da Vila, Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Igreja Matriz de S. Salvador, Capela de Santo AntĂłnio, the river beach and Casa do Artesanato. Its approximate length and circular route make it easy to plan PR3 Os Encantos de Alcoutim as a hike in its own right.
At Praia fluvial do Pego Fundo, a river beach on the Ribeira de Cadavais, youâll find calm water, a garden and a volleyball court. Facilities enable people with reduced mobility to access the sandy beach and water. Seasonal services may vary. Boat trips are also available on the Guadiana near Alcoutim. The townâs history is closely linked to the stretch of river reached by the tides: in the past, boats carrying goods from the region often waited there for several hours for favourable sailing conditions.
Traditions and practical information
Annual events include Caminheiros, a hiking festival held in late winter in the cross-border region of Alcoutim and SanlĂșcar de Guadiana. The annual river procession in honour of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, the Virgin of Seafarers, also brings decorated boats and the communities of Alcoutim in Portugal and SanlĂșcar in Spain together on the Guadiana. You can check the exact event dates before your trip.
Traditional crafts such as linen work, embroidery, lace-making, reed basketry, pottery and shoemaking are still practised in the municipality of Alcoutim. Transport connections within the municipality may also influence your choice of where to stay: public road transport is operated exclusively by EVA Transportes, SA; services are limited outside the main routes. Routes and service frequencies may change, so itâs best to check them before travelling. Guided tours of the four museum sections are available by prior arrangement at the reception desk of Alcoutim Castle; check the booking conditions in advance.
