Cultural heritage and nature offer different themes to help you choose your destination.

Castle, Fortifications and the History of the Hill

Castelo de Castro Marim stands on a hill on the right bank of the Guadiana. The hill also tells of earlier periods of settlement: extensive archaeological excavations there uncovered evidence of human settlement dating from the Late Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the Roman period. The Castelo is believed to have been the seat of the Order of Santiago from 1319 to 1356.

Another notable part of the architectural heritage is Forte de São Sebastião. Its walled complex comprises five bastions. Construction is thought to have begun in 1641, during the Restoration War with Spain. Revelim de Santo António offers another perspective on the Guadiana: inside it is a Baroque chapel dedicated to Santo António. The Revelim served to control the course of the river. Together, the castle, Forte and Revelim represent different aspects of Castro Marim’s fortified history.

Salt Tradition and Local Products

Casa do Sal is housed in a restored former warehouse known locally as “Balalaica”. One area showcases products from Castro Marim’s traditional salt-panning industry. This way, you can encounter the salt tradition not only as part of the landscape, but also as part of local product culture.

The Mercado Local adds a broader tourism and cultural dimension to this insight. It promotes local arts and knowledge and is a key place for showcasing regional products from the municipality of Castro Marim. If you are interested in local production and cultural life, Casa do Sal and Mercado Local offer two different points of connection: products from the salt-panning industry in one place, and a broader range of regional products and knowledge in the other.

Getting Your Bearings and Routes

The Centro de Interpretação do Território is a visitor reception centre and also a starting point for excursions and sightseeing in the municipality of Castro Marim and the Baixo Guadiana. When planning excursions and sightseeing, the GR15 Grande Rota do Guadiana can serve as a route reference.

Nature and Visit Planning

The Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo António was the first area in mainland Portugal to be designated a nature reserve. Its name includes Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António. White storks, flamingos and stilts can be spotted in the reserve throughout the year. Nature watching thus adds a focus of its own to the destination’s historical and cultural themes.

Visits to the salt pan can be arranged in advance; its operation is seasonal. Plan such a visit by making arrangements beforehand and check whether visits are possible before you travel. The festival calendar also offers a specific date: the celebrations in honour of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, the patron saint of Castro Marim, take place on 15 August. When planning your trip, you can decide whether your main interest is the castle and fortifications, salt-panning culture, nature watching or a visit timed around this festival.
