Faro brings together traces of different centuries and the landscape of the Ria Formosa. The different access options and time periods can help you plan your visit.

Historic Buildings in Faro

The Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assunção was founded by D. Leonor, the wife of D. João II; construction began in 1519. Another landmark is the Arco da Vila: its monumental portal was built over a medieval city gate. The Arco contains the Porta Árabe, which formed part of Faro’s earlier Muslim walls and served as an entrance to the city for those arriving by sea.

The Sé Catedral also preserves architectural features from its early history: the bell tower and two transept chapels from the original building, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. At the same time, it houses one of the Algarve’s most valuable collections of art from the 17th and 18th centuries. These dates and surviving features offer different points of interest if you are interested in architecture and art history.

Chapels, Churches and Museums

The Ermida de Santo António do Alto combines a chapel dating from the 15th or 16th century with an existing watchtower. The Museu Antonino de Faro is housed in the tower. If you plan to visit the museum, check access arrangements in advance.

The church of the Third Order of St. Francis features blue-and-white tilework dating from the 18th century, created between 1720 and 1730. Construction of the Igreja do Carmo spanned almost the entire 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century; the final bell tower was completed in 1807. At these churches, you can encounter both precisely dated tilework and buildings constructed over long periods.

The Museu Municipal de Faro is housed in the Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, which is classified as a National Monument. Its archaeological collection includes objects from prehistoric times, as well as from the Roman and medieval periods. Roman pieces include a mosaic from the 2nd or 3rd century, busts of the emperors Hadrian and Agrippina, and inscriptions from Ossonoba. The collection thus spans early periods and specific evidence of the Roman past.

Ria Formosa and the Coastal Landscape

The municipality of Faro is part of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa. Its landscapes include barrier islands, marshland, sandbanks, mudflats, dunes, salt pans, and freshwater and brackish-water lagoons. The Ria Formosa is also important for migratory birds: birds from northern Europe use it to overwinter or as a stopover on their migration to areas farther south.

Praia da Ilha de Faro is part of the natural park and can be reached via a narrow bridge connected to the road from Faro. Praia da Ilha do Farol is a barrier island between the sea and the Ria Formosa and is also part of the natural park. It can be reached from Faro by regular boat services. Praia da Ilha da Barreta, also known as Ilha Deserta, has different access arrangements: it can only be reached by boat, from June to September, and the journey takes about 20 minutes. Sailing, windsurfing, and boat trips are among the activities available there.

Regular services and other boats depart from Cais da Porta Nova, operating trips on the Ria Formosa and taking visitors to the islands. Timetables may vary, so check the times before your trip. When planning, you can distinguish between bridge access, regular boat services, and the seasonal window for Barreta.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

The Algarve’s international airport is about four kilometres from Faro city centre. Regular train services connect Faro railway station with other cities in Portugal; current services and timetables may vary. For your stay, these transport links and the different ways to reach the coast give you concrete factors to consider alongside your interest in heritage, collections, or island destinations.
