The coast of Lagoa is characterised by an almost continuous, highly rugged line of cliffs that usually drops steeply to the ocean. The area of Lagoa, situated predominantly on the Atlantic coast, stretches for about 17 kilometres; to the south, Lagoa borders the Atlantic. Along the coast, striking rock formations meet trails that offer different ways to experience the landscape and nature.

Cliffs, Rocks and Coastal Trails

Algar Seco is an ochre-coloured labyrinth of limestone rocks, shaped by rainwater and the sea. The trail there includes about 600 metres of boardwalk and offers views of the sea, as well as glimpses of the Mediterranean cliff vegetation and the diversity of coastal fauna. You can experience the rocky landscape as you walk and take in the views out to sea.

The Caminho dos Promontórios is a six-kilometre coastal trail from Praia do Molhe at the mouth of the Arade to Praia do Paraíso near Carvoeiro. Signs along the route provide information about geology, lithology and geomorphology, marine ecosystems, coastal vegetation and the coast’s former inhabitants. The 5.7-kilometre Sete Vales Suspensos walking trail connects Praia de Vale Centeanes with Praia da Marinha. The stated lengths of the two trails differ little, but each runs between a different pair of beaches.

A long staircase leads down to Praia da Marinha from the clifftop viewpoint. You can also explore the coast from the water: fishing boats at Praia do Carvoeiro offer trips to nearby caves and sea caves. In the area of Praia de Benagil, boat trips provide access to beaches that cannot be reached by land. Pedra da Torre is a dive site in the municipality of Lagoa; small boats are available for hire at Praia dos Caneiros. Conditions, operators and the availability of rental services may vary.

Natural Landscapes and Cultural Heritage

Sítio das Fontes encompasses a variety of Mediterranean landscape features: marshes and wetlands, scrubland, a small intermittent lagoon, abandoned agricultural land, as well as bodies of water and watercourses. The site also includes two historic watermills. A 15th-century book documents the date of at least one of them. Sítio das Fontes has traditionally been used for leisure activities and contact with nature.

Lagoa’s buildings also tell the story of different eras. Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz, Matriz de Lagoa, already existed before 1755, was renovated in the Neoclassical style and consecrated in September 1814. It preserves an illuminated parchment leaf from a 13th-century hymn book. The chapel of Forte e Capela de Nossa Senhora da Rocha features an octagonal dome; a Visigothic capital is located in the narthex. Torre da Lapa, also known as Torre da Marinha, stands on a secluded cliff east of the mouth of the Arade, near Ferragudo. This massive circular structure is made of rendered stone masonry with lime mortar.

The former Convent of São José, now the Centro Cultural – Convento de S. José, probably dates back to the 17th century. Two permanent exhibitions focus on the history of the building; the Roda dos Expostos is also preserved there. Information and tickets are available at reception. The shop sells local handicrafts and products from regional cuisine.

Check local dates or the current programme before your visit. In June, Carvoeiro Black & White brings together music, street entertainment and artistic performances. Parque Municipal de Feiras e Exposições covers about 50,000 square metres and has more than 800 adaptable spaces for various fairs and major cultural events.

Planning Your Stay

Auditório Carlos do Carmo hosts the municipality’s cultural programme, featuring music, dance and theatre, as well as conferences, training courses and temporary exhibitions. The auditorium has 298 seats, including three adapted spaces for people with reduced mobility. Information and tickets are available at reception. If you are planning to travel by train, you can consider Estômbar-Lagoa station, which is on the Linha do Algarve. Check train timetables separately before travelling.

When planning your hotel stay, you can first decide whether coastal trails, cultural heritage, regional cuisine or a particular event date will be the main focus. The walking trails, with their lengths and endpoints, provide practical details for planning your day; for events, it is worth checking the confirmed dates. This makes it easier to choose your travel dates based on the experiences that interest you.
