Alferce: Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Alferce
The Passadiço do Barranco do Demo, the archaeological site Sítio Arqueológico do Cerro do Castelo de Alferce, and the Museu de Arte Sacra at Igreja de São Romão showcase different aspects of Alferce: its landscape, the history of Islamic settlement, and sacred art. When planning your visit, you can distinguish between these highlights: a trail with rest areas and viewpoints is different from an archaeological site or a church collection.
Landscape and Views
The Passadiço do Barranco do Demo has rest areas and natural viewpoints. The rest areas are useful for taking breaks, while the natural viewpoints offer views across the landscape. If you plan to walk the trail, check the facilities and route conditions before setting out.
The archaeological site Sítio Arqueológico do Cerro do Castelo de Alferce is located on the summit of a hill on the eastern edge of the Serra de Monchique, at an altitude of about 488 m. From there, sweeping views extend over the Picota massif and the Odelouca and Monchique rivers. Unlike the viewpoints along the Passadiço, the hilltop setting here is part of an archaeological site. The landscape and the historic site thus offer two different perspectives on Alferce.
Archaeology at Cerro do Castelo
The site’s best-preserved Islamic settlement phase consisted of a fortified settlement with a military garrison and three walled enclosures. To understand its history, both the settlement and the specific layout of the fortified complex are important. The three walled enclosures and the garrison bring this phase to life.
The Centro Interpretativo do Cerro do Castelo de Alferce, or CICCA for short, is a museum space dedicated to the archaeological and historical interpretation of Cerro do Castelo. Its permanent exhibition includes information panels, models, digital reconstructions, and archaeological objects found during excavations. The panels, models, and digital reconstructions complement the finds with different forms of presentation. The archaeological site and its interpretation at CICCA therefore offer two distinct ways of exploring the same historical subject.
For group visits to CICCA, the parish lists the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, by prior arrangement. If you are planning a group visit, schedule it for these times and confirm the details in advance.
Church and Sacred Art
The Museu de Arte Sacra da Igreja de São Romão de Alferce is integrated into the Igreja Paroquial de São Romão complex. It houses liturgical and devotional objects, including sacred images, old liturgical vestments, chalices, and crosses. Its collection has a different focus from CICCA: here the emphasis is on sacred objects, while CICCA focuses on the archaeological and historical interpretation of Cerro do Castelo.
Igreja de São Romão is believed to be of medieval origin and has been rebuilt and adapted several times over the centuries. Both aspects are important to understanding its history: the cautious attribution of its origins and the changes made over time. If you are interested in sacred art, the museum’s object collections offer a different focus from the history of the church building itself.
