When looking for a hotel in Gouveia, you can first decide which focus you want to shape your trip: modern Portuguese art, Jewish history, or nature observation. The city offers a range of cultural institutions and an ecologically oriented park. These themes complement each other without conveying the same things: art collections and exhibitions sit alongside historical traces, while Parque Ecológico focuses on the relationship between wildlife and habitats.

Art and Museums in Gouveia

The Museu Municipal de Arte Moderna Abel Manta is located on the first floor of the Solar dos Condes de Vinhó. Its core collection comprises 20th-century Portuguese painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking, with a particular focus on Abel Manta. Visitors interested in several art forms will find a collection that brings together different media from the same century.

The museum also offers temporary exhibitions, guided and themed tours, experimental workshops, holiday art studios, and educational programs for schools. Its program therefore goes beyond viewing the collection and includes different ways of engaging with art. Individual exhibitions and dates may vary.

The Museu da Miniatura Automóvel explores a different subject. It opened in Gouveia on November 24, 2007, next to the Paços do Concelho building. Miniature cars provide a distinct focus alongside the Museu Municipal’s art collection: here, the emphasis is on miniature automobiles, while there it is on 20th-century Portuguese art.

Jewish Heritage and History

The Casa da Vivência Judaica is a cultural center dedicated to preserving and presenting Gouveia’s medieval Jewish heritage and early modern New Christian heritage. These two historical focuses give a timeframe to a visit, from the medieval heritage through to the early modern period.

The collection includes a rare complete Hebrew inscription. It was part of Gouveia’s medieval synagogue, the last one built before the decree of D. Manuel in 1496. The inscription thus connects a specific item in the collection with the history of the city’s Jewish heritage.

Green Spaces and Wildlife Observation

Parque Ecológico de Gouveia was established by the city council in 1999 and covers a total area of six hectares. Its purpose is environmental education: visitors learn about the relationship between animal species and their natural habitats. The park therefore offers a different focus from the city’s cultural institutions.

At Parque Ecológico, visitors can observe wild boar, fallow deer, and red deer, as well as other mammals, birds, and reptiles. This offers a distinct area of interest for those interested in wildlife and habitats, alongside the art and history collections. Gouveia also stands out for its wide variety of green spaces, parks, and gardens.
