Pinhel: Castle, Museums and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Pinhel
Pinhel brings together historic buildings and museums, a walking route and regional traditions. The historic centre stands on a hill entirely enclosed by the walled grounds of Castelo de Pinhel; two waterways surround the hill. This gives you several themes to consider when planning your trip: medieval architecture, exhibitions on Pinhel’s history, views and the municipality’s cuisine.
Castle and Churches in the Historic Centre
Castelo de Pinhel has two large, square towers. The north tower features a Manueline-style window. The Centro Interpretativo do Castelo e Territórios de Pinhel includes a virtual reconstruction of the castle and aims to introduce visitors to its history and Pinhel’s border region. At the castle, visible architecture and a distinct narrative perspective come together.
Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo was Pinhel’s most important religious building in the Middle Ages. The Gothic church dates from the 14th century, as does its portal. It lies within the Gothic walls of the historic centre. Its single-nave interior has a gilded coffered ceiling. Igreja de SĂŁo LuĂs and its adjoining convent tell a different story: both were founded in 1596 by LuĂs de Figueiredo FalcĂŁo to house a community of Poor Clare nuns.
Two Museums in Casa da Cultura
Casa da Cultura is housed in the former episcopal palace, which dates back to the late 18th century. It is home to the Museu Municipal and the Museu José Manuel Soares. The two museums have different focuses: the Museu Municipal explores Pinhel’s heritage from prehistory to the present day. Its modern museographic design and interactive features highlight the city’s medieval significance in particular. Military objects on display include a bascinet helmet and a bombard.
The Museu José Manuel Soares is dedicated to works and themes relating to illustration, Portuguese history, landscapes and monuments. Together, the collections offer several ways to explore Pinhel: from a broad overview across time and specific military objects to Portuguese history and imagery.
Explore on Foot and Enjoy the Views
The 800-metre Caminho de Ronda runs around the historic centre. It can be explored on foot and offers panoramic views of the city and Castelo de Pinhel. For a view of the landscape, there is also the Miradouro da Faia, with a transparent platform about 210 metres above the CĂ´a River. A 450-metre footpath from the village of Faia leads to the final sections of the route. As physical access details may change, it is advisable to check access before your visit.
Traditions and Cuisine of the Municipality of Pinhel
The Feira das Tradições e Atividades Económicas has been held since 1996. Each edition invites visitors to discover old traditions presented by craftspeople from the municipality. Alongside its architecture, this gives the destination a connection to craftsmanship and regional life without assigning the fair to a particular time of year.
One of the municipality’s culinary specialities is “lagaradas”: baked cod with crushed potatoes, topped with plenty of hot olive oil. The dish is usually prepared during the olive harvest and served and sampled at olive mills. This seasonal connection distinguishes lagaradas from Pinhel’s historical themes, which are presented year-round, and may play a role in choosing when to travel.
Consider which of these aspects you would like to include, and check the location and current availability when reviewing a specific hotel offer.
