For a trip to Caxias, you can choose between the beach, architectural history, and outdoor activities. Praia de Caxias offers a beach experience, while Forte de São Bruno, Paço Real de Caxias, and Quinta da Cartuxa showcase different aspects of the area’s heritage. There is also a cycle path between Caxias and Cruz Quebrada.

Beach and orientation

Praia de Caxias is located on Estrada Marginal, directly opposite Caxias railway station. These provide two clear reference points for finding your way. The beach consists of three stretches of sand; Forte de São Bruno separates the two smaller ones. The beach is sheltered from the wind and normally has calm waters. The fort is both part of the beach’s layout and a landmark in its own right.

Fortifications and gardens

Forte de São Bruno is located in Caxias, by the Ribeira de Barcarena. Its ground plan is polygonal and star-shaped, and it includes two bastions and a square central courtyard. “Polygonal” describes a shape with multiple sides; the star shape describes the outline more precisely. The bastions and courtyard add structure to the fort’s exterior form.

Paço Real de Caxias was built in the mid-18th century at the initiative of Infante D. Francisco, a son of D. Pedro II. Its geometric gardens reflect French influence and the style of gardens à Le Nôtre. The cascade evokes the imitation of nature typical of the second half of the 18th century. This highlights two distinct architectural approaches: at the fort, the ground plan and bastions define its character; at the Paço, it is the geometric gardens and cascade.

Quinta da Cartuxa

Quinta da Cartuxa adds another ensemble to the historical picture. Located in Caxias, it includes a former 17th-century monastery with a church, cloister, and outbuildings. The Quinta is considered an important heritage site of historical, architectural, cultural, landscape, and symbolic value. Unlike the Paço, the focus here is on a monastic ensemble and its component buildings, rather than geometric gardens and a cascade. The two sites also differ in age: the monastery dates from the 17th century, while the Paço was built in the mid-18th century.

Cycle path and event

The Ciclovia do Passeio Marítimo is a cycle path between Caxias and Cruz Quebrada. Route details may change as the municipal network changes, so check the current route before setting out. The GP Caxias is a different event to plan around: in the 2025/26 edition, it was included as a road race in the 43rd edition of the “Troféu Câmara Municipal de Oeiras – Corridas das Localidades.” Event dates vary; if the race is relevant to your trip, check the date before planning your travel around it. These two points address different planning questions: for the cycle path, check the route status; for the GP, check the date.
