Alpalhão brings together routes, architectural history and inherited customs: a stage of the Camino de Santiago leads from here to Nisa, churches and chapels reflect several centuries, and local feast days are marked by various traditions. The blue granite and distinctive rock formations are also part of the town’s character. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip combining culture, landscape and local stories, you can explore Alpalhão through these themes and choose the focus of your stay accordingly.

Churches, Chapels and Long Historical Timelines

Alpalhão Castle was founded around 1300 by D. Dinis; the Alpalhão Cruzeiro dates from the 16th century. The religious buildings reflect different periods: the chancel of the Igreja do Espírito Santo, also known as the Igreja da Misericórdia, dates from the late 14th century. The Capela de São Sebastião is dated to the late 16th or early 17th century, while the Igreja Matriz de N. Senhora da Graça probably dates from the early 17th century.

The Capela do Calvário was built at the end of the 16th century and is considered a typical rural chapel of the Alto Alentejo. Its circular ground plan symbolizes the Holy Sepulchre. The Capela de São Pedro has a 16th-century Mannerist high altar. The Capela de N. Sra. da Redonda is a 16th-century religious building located 2 km from Alpalhão. These buildings reflect a range of art- and architectural-historical influences, from the circular ground plan to the Mannerist altar.

Routes and Geological Features

Stage 2 of the Camino de Santiago runs for 14.5 km from Alpalhão to Nisa. On the Via Portugal Nascente, the described section is about 1 km from Alpalhão and then enters the town via Rua da Carreira. The information answers different wayfinding questions: the first gives the length of a complete stage and its destination, while the second locates a section in relation to the town and describes the onward route into it.

Geological features also shape the town’s history beyond its routes. Focinho do Porco is a large granite rock whose shape resembles a pig’s snout. Alpalhão’s blue granite is considered a distinctive local geological resource with special properties. The Anta de N. Sra. da Redonda, also called Anta do Vale Joanino, is a dolmen near the access road to the Capela de N. Sra. da Redonda.

Fountains and Traditional Feast Days

Fonte de Baixo was built in the mid-18th century. It was formerly called Fonte da Arca; later, it was moved to its present location and fitted with a washhouse. On the night of São João, locals traditionally visit the fountain, drink “água nova” there and wet the tips of their hair with it.

The São Sebastião celebration includes a procession on the Sunday after 20 January; Mártir Santo in Alpalhão is listed in the municipal calendar for 20 January. Another procession, the Procissão dos Passos, passes five Stations of the Cross between the Igreja Matriz and the Capela do Calvário. The Feira dos Enchidos is one of Alpalhão’s major annual events and promotes local gastronomy and traditions. For specific dates, consult the current events calendar. Nossa Senhora da Redonda is listed in the municipal festival calendar for Easter Monday and Easter Tuesday; because Easter is a movable feast, the calendar dates for these days change from year to year.

Collections and Visits

The Casa Museu de Alpalhão can be visited by appointment through the Junta de Freguesia de Alpalhão. The Museu da Misericórdia opened on 27 June 2004 and brings together religious objects that had previously been distributed across several buildings. The Casa do Brinquedo has a different focus: it contains more than 200 antique toys made of wire or stone, as well as cloth and porcelain dolls. The three houses therefore offer different points of interest, from religious objects and toys to the Casa Museu, which you can visit by arranging an appointment through the Junta.
