Belver brings together several distinct themes for planning your trip: the history of the Castelo, church art, local weaving and the landscape along the Tagus. There is also a trail with figures engraved in stone, a viewpoint and a riverside leisure centre. This lets you shape your stay around different interests without reducing Belver to its castle alone.

The Castelo and Church Art

The Castelo de Belver dates back to 1194. At that time, D. Sancho I granted Afonso Pães, the Order’s prior, the so-called lands of Guidintesta on the condition that he build a castle. The Castelo has a special place in the history of the Hospitallers in Portugal: it was the first castle built by the Order in Portugal. It has been a national monument since 1910. The dates represent different aspects: 1194 marks its historical origins, while 1910 marks the beginning of its protected status as a monument.

The Igreja Matriz de Belver offers another perspective on Belver’s architectural and artistic history. Built in the 16th century, it is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Visitação. Inside the church, a panel painting in the so-called Altar das Almas depicts Saint Michael in Purgatory and is attributed to Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho. The dedication and the painting’s subject are two distinct points of reference: the church is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Visitação, while the painting depicts Saint Michael.

Weaving and Local History

The Núcleo Museológico das Mantas e Tapeçarias de Belver preserves the memory of local textile craftsmanship. Exhibits include looms, raw materials and tools. The museum also covers the history of the former Natividade Nunes da Silva factory and the items produced there. This offers several ways to explore the weaving tradition, from materials and tools to the factory’s history and its products. Visitors interested in local crafts will find a different focus here than at the historic buildings.

Trails and Views Along the Tagus

The Caminho da Fonte Velha combines two distinctive features: figures engraved in stone and views of the Tagus slopes. The Miradouro do Outeirinho offers a different perspective. As a viewpoint overlooking the Tagus, it provides views of landscapes along the Tagus Valley. When planning your visit, you can choose between a trail that combines historic details and scenic views, and a viewpoint overlooking the river and valley.

At the Praia Fluvial da Quinta do Alamal river beach, you can choose from different experiences connected with the water. The beach is part of a leisure centre with an Adventure Centre. Activities on offer include abseiling, slides, boating and canoeing. A wooden boardwalk runs between Quinta do Alamal beach and Belver Bridge, offering views of the riverside flora and fauna along the way. The boardwalk and the Adventure Centre offer different experiences: one focuses on views of the riverside landscape, the other on activities.
