Campo Maior: Fortress History and Culture
Accommodation in Campo Maior
If you are looking for a hotel in Campo Maior, you can plan your stay around the topics that interest you there: the history of the fortifications, the development of the municipality and its population, or insights into coffee and olive oil. The attractions focus on different themes. Comparing them can help you plan your visits and time in town so you can make room for the topics that interest you.
Fortifications and Castle
The Centro Interpretativo da Fortificação Abaluartada de Campo Maior presents the history of a fortification that spans centuries of military history. A visit includes the fortress walls, the Castelo and exhibits on Campo Maior’s military history. The focus is on both the fortifications themselves and their place in military history.
Tours are guided and last approximately 90 minutes. As schedules may change, check the current times before your visit. The Castelo stands at the highest point of the town and offers a panoramic view of Campo Maior and the surrounding countryside. It was rebuilt during the reign of D. Dinis.
History and Everyday Culture
The Museu Aberto traces the history of the municipality of Campo Maior and its population from prehistoric times to the present day. Ethnographic displays show what people’s homes and occupations, clothing, customs and traditions were like. This brings together a broad historical perspective and specific insights into people’s lives: the chronology guides visitors through history, while the ethnographic themes illustrate aspects of everyday life.
The Centro Interpretativo das Festas do Povo – Casa das Flores offers an interactive experience with a strong technological focus, presenting the history of the Festas do Povo, from how a street is decorated to the enramação. The Casa-Museu Santa Beatriz da Silva offers a different biographical focus. It is dedicated to the first Portuguese saint, who was born in Campo Maior and founded the Order of the Immaculate Conception.
Route and Time Planning
The Percurso Defesas de Campo Maior (PR4 CMR) is a moderate 7.5-kilometre circular route, with an estimated duration of approximately three hours. It leads from the town centre along uphill streets to the highest point of the former military fortifications. Compared with the approximately 90-minute guided tour, the circular route takes longer. These two timings can help you fit different activities into your plans.
Coffee and Olive Oil
The Centro de Ciência do Café combines scientific content, interactive activities and training spaces to create a learning experience for visitors. Its themes range from the coffee plant’s life cycle to the bean, roasting and consumption models. This lets visitors explore the subject through several stages, from the life of the plant to the ways coffee is consumed.
The Lagar-Museu focuses on the process from growing and harvesting olives to processing them into olive oil. Unlike the coffee centre, whose themes also include consumption models, this visit follows olives through to oil production. If you are interested in the history and processing of regional products, the two institutions offer different perspectives.
