For a trip to Fronteira, you can choose from different areas of interest: the Ecopista Atoleiros–Sulfúrea, historic buildings and prehistoric traces, as well as events and a nature-oriented leisure area nearby. This lets you decide whether routes, cultural heritage, nature or an event are your main priority.

Routes and nature

The former railway line in the municipality of Fronteira has been converted into the Ecopista Atoleiros–Sulfúrea. The Ecopista forms part of the Caminhos de Santiago pilgrimage route. The former railway infrastructure and its connection to the pilgrimage route give the trail several different facets. If hiking or cycling are among your travel interests, the Ecopista provides a clear point of reference in Fronteira.

Nearby, the Centro EcoturĂstico da Ribeira Grande features a large watercourse and green landscapes with significant areas of biodiversity. The area is often used for recreation. The watercourse, landscape and biodiversity provide a connection with nature, while recreational use adds another focus alongside the routes and historic buildings.

History and buildings

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Atalaia was built in the 16th century at the behest of King D. Sebastião and completed in 1599 by D. Lucas de Portugal. Inside, three vaulted naves of equal height divide the space; the main altar is made entirely of marble. The building’s history, its layout and the altar’s material can thus be considered as distinct architectural features.

The Arco dos Santos is a pointed arch dating from the 14th century that marked a former entrance to the fortified settlement of Fronteira. The Capela do Arco dos Santos was built above the former Porta dos Santos and has existed since at least 1695. The founding of Fronteira is attributed to King D. Dinis. Ruins remain of the former Castelo de Fronteira. Other notable monuments in Fronteira include the Igreja do EspĂrito Santo and the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Vila Velha.

The former railway station of Fronteira is also part of the town’s cultural heritage: its tile panels by Leopoldo Battistini depict scenes of rural life. A visit to the Centro de Interpretação da Batalha de Atoleiros includes four exhibition areas.

Prehistoric traces

The megalithic necropolis of Herdade Grande comprises around 30 anta tombs and dolmens and is associated with human settlement in Fronteira. The rock carvings at Herdade dos Pintos are also prehistoric traces of human settlement associated with Fronteira. These examples represent different forms of this heritage: a megalithic necropolis with anta tombs and dolmens on the one hand, and rock carvings on the other.

Festivals and events

The traditional Festas de VerĂŁo in Fronteira honour Nossa Senhora da Vila Velha. The 24 Horas TT Vila de Fronteira has a different character: this demanding off-road endurance competition takes place at the TerrĂłdromo de Fronteira. If a festival or race is a deciding factor in your trip, check the dates of the event in advance.
