Gavião lies at the meeting point of Alentejo, Ribatejo and Beira Interior. Hiking trails along the Tagus, Belver Castle and museums dedicated to history and crafts offer different reasons to explore the area. The trails also vary in character: circular routes and a linear route differ in length and difficulty; approximate walking times are provided for two of them.

Hiking between circular trails and river history

The PR1 – Arribas do Tejo is a moderately difficult circular hiking trail. It starts at Largo Luís de Camões in Belver, is 16.2 kilometres long and takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes. A shorter alternative rated as easy, with a stated walking time, is the linear PR8 – Rota da Sirga: it starts at the Belver Bridge, covers 5.8 kilometres and takes around 3 hours. There are notices of temporary closures for the PR1 and PR8. Check the current trail status before setting out.

Two other easy circular trails offer a different comparison in length: the PR3 – No Remanso da Ribeira da Venda covers 16.4 kilometres and starts in the centre of Comenda. The PR4 – Rota dos Moinhos da Ribeira de Margem is 16.6 kilometres long; it starts and ends in Vale de Gaviões. So when choosing, the starting point and stated difficulty matter as well as the distance.

The PR8 connects the PR1 with the PR2 – Corredor Ecológico das Ribeiras de Alferreireira e Barrocas. On the left bank of the Tagus in the municipality of Gavião, it follows historic fishermen’s paths and passes along Sirga walls. These walls were once used to pull boats upstream. The route thus combines a specific hiking trail with traces of the river’s former use.

The Tagus landscape and places by the water

From the Observatório de Avifauna do Outeiro, the view extends far across the Tagus Valley. Birds of prey use the rock formations for nesting. The landscape around the observation area also includes scrubland, wetlands, rocky areas, and cultivated and reforested land. For a viewpoint with a landmark building in view, Miradouro Tapada da Senhora offers a natural setting with Belver Castle in the background.

At the Parque de Merendas da Ribeira da Venda, green areas with dense tree cover meet spring water and several bridges. These include the old Roman bridge over the Ribeira da Venda. There is a riverside beach area and a children’s pool beside the dam. Praia Fluvial do Alamal is part of a walking trail that includes a walkable stretch along the Tagus, leading there from the Belver Bridge. Check current access before planning this walk.

Castle, museums and architectural history

Belver Castle dates back to 1194 and was the first castle built by the Hospitallers in Portugal. It has been a National Monument since 1910. It is considered one of the most complete examples of medieval military architecture in Portugal; its original structure has been preserved almost unchanged. These features make the castle a distinctive reference point for the history and architecture of the area.

The Museu do Sabão tells the story of Belver’s former royal soap factory and the family soap-making tradition that grew out of it. The museum is housed in a former primary school building that was converted for this purpose. The Museu de Arte e da Atrelagem de Gavião focuses in particular on horse-drawn carriages from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as various movable cultural and family possessions. The Museu do Vinho e do Pão displays historic wine- and bread-making equipment, grain and other tools. The exhibits also include a unique spindle made of holm oak wood.

Other buildings complement these themes in the townscape. The Coreto de Gavião stands in Praça do Município, was built in 1910 and donated by the Patrício family. Bandstands of this kind provided space for music bands to perform at concerts, festivals and religious celebrations. Casa da Torre stands out for its Art Nouveau tiles and a tower with a geodetic marker. The Igreja Matriz de Gavião is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção and was built in the 17th century by Pedro Nunes Tinoco on behalf of the Priory of Crato.
