Architectural History and Tile Art

Sections of the original walls of a fortress remain at Terreiro do Castelo. King D. Dinis ordered its construction in 1309. The Torre do Relógio is built into the wall of the medieval castle beside the Évora Gate. It was extensively remodelled in the 18th century and fitted with a new clock. The surviving fortification walls and the tower’s later construction phase thus represent different periods in the town’s history.

The former Convento do Bom Jesus de Monforte can also be placed in its historical context: it was founded in 1520, expanded in the 18th century, and dissolved in 1862. The Igreja Matriz de Monforte, formerly known as Santa Maria da Graça, was built in the 13th century and altered in the 18th century. These different construction phases give the churches and former monastic buildings their own historical context.

In the Capela Senhor dos Passos, 17th-century architecture meets religious imagery: the chapel is decorated with blue-and-white tiles and six panels depicting the Passion of Christ. An extensive sequence of images features Queen Santa Isabel as its central theme. It comprises 16 large figurative tile panels made up of around 16,000 tiles; 13 of the panels deal with themes related to Santa Isabel. Compared with the six-part sequence in the chapel, this central feature places a much greater emphasis on imagery.

The former Igreja de São Pedro now serves as a venue for theatre and artistic and cultural performances. SOFIMO brings the venue to life with theatre and music productions. Alongside the historic religious buildings, this cultural use, which provides space for performances, is also a central feature.

Routes through Montado and Riverside Landscapes

The Grande Rota dos Montes de Monforte leaves Monforte via the Ponte Romana, which crosses the Ribeira Grande. The route passes through extensive areas of Montado, with holm oaks and cork oaks of varying ages and densities. It also crosses pasture and fodder-crop areas. The route therefore alternates between tree-dominated areas and land used for agriculture.

The Rota das Antas da Rabuje follows a different course: a linear out-and-back route through the area around Monforte, past the Rossio and the riverside recreation area, and through Montado woodlands and centuries-old olive groves. The Grande Rota leaves the town via the Roman bridge; the Rota das Antas is described as an out-and-back route through the town area. This difference in route layout helps distinguish the two routes by their respective courses.

The Percurso Entre Ribeiras features dense, species-rich riverside woodlands and is home to the otter (Lutra lutra) and the genet (Genetta genetta). Its focus on riverside woodland and the named animal species complements the Montado and olive-grove landscapes of the other routes with a distinct connection to nature.
