You can focus on outdoor activities or make particular historical and culinary themes the centre of your visit.
Trails and activities around Baião
The Trilho dos Dólmens – PR4 is a circular hiking trail about 11 kilometres long. A shorter route with a different layout is the linear trail Todos os Caminhos Levam a Roma: about 3 kilometres long, it connects Mosteiro de Santo André de Ancede with Porto Manso. This offers two different hiking options: a longer loop and a short connection between two named places.
In the surrounding area, Todos os Caminhos Levam a Roma passes sites with Roman, castro culture and religious heritage, as well as the Ermidas de São Domingos and Nossa Senhora do Pé da Cruz. Porto Manso is on the north bank of the Douro and is an Aldeia de Portugal. The route combines a walk with several cultural points of interest; its name alone does not indicate the exact duration of the walk.
The Centro Hípico de Baião offers riding lessons and hippotherapy sessions. The area is also well suited to hiking, mountain biking, orienteering and horse riding. Another specific point of reference is the PR1 Trilho das Florestas Naturais, which starts at the Igreja Matriz de S. João de Ovil. Part of a Romanesque frieze is visible on its north façade.
Churches, monastery and cultural history
The Igreja de São Tiago de Valadares was built at the end of the 13th century. It is known for its rare 15th-century frescoes. Historically, it was also a stopping point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago. Its construction date, wall paintings and links to pilgrimage offer visitors different historical perspectives.
The origins of Mosteiro de Santo André de Ancede date back to the 12th century. In 2013, it was classified as a Monumento de Interesse Público, or monument of public interest. The Canons Regular of Saint Augustine played a role in Ancede’s economic, cultural and spiritual importance. Two dates are associated with the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho: it was built in 1731, while its portal bears the date 1735. The portal also features the coat of arms of the Dominicans.
Casa de Tormes is also part of the cultural offer: it is now home to the Fundação Eça de Queiroz. Its museum houses the writer’s estate. Together, Baião’s religious architecture, historic pilgrim routes and a place associated with literature offer a varied cultural experience.
Landscape and regional specialities
Within the municipality of Baião, the Rio Teixeira is notable for its high level of preservation and ecological value. The Rio Ovil is considered an important tourist attraction for the purity of its water, its well-maintained beaches and its abundant fish. The Serra do Castelo lies entirely within the municipality of Baião, at the transition between the highlands and the headwaters of the Douro’s tributaries. These three landscape features each have a different focus: river conservation, nature and recreation by the water, and a setting between mountain ranges and river sources.
Traditional cuisine includes Fumeiro de Baião, with Salpicão, Presunto, Linguiça, Moira, Alheira, Pá, Farinheira, smoked belly and smoked head. Another culinary tradition is Biscoito da Teixeira, a biscuit associated with festivals and pilgrimages in northern Portugal. Its name probably derives from the municipality of Teixeira.
