Frende brings together archaeological evidence, a passed-down basket-weaving tradition and a distinctly hilly landscape with fertile valleys. If you are choosing a place to stay based on culture and scenery, there are several specific points of interest: its archaeological connections include Roman reliefs and an Iron Age dating; basketry is both a craft and knowledge passed down within families. The Douro reveals another, scenic side of the place.

Archaeology in Frende

The Tríptico de Frende consists of three bas-reliefs from the Roman period. The Santuário de S. João de Frende on Rua do Castelo is dated to the Iron Age and was discovered during an archaeological excavation in 1973 led by Carlos Alberto Ferreira de Almeida.

The small Capela de São João, dedicated to São João and designated an archaeological site, stands on Alto do Castelo. The archaeological site of São João is regarded as a place where the transition from paganism to Christianity can be observed. Thus, alongside the Roman period, there are archaeological connections to other historical contexts.

Near the Capela de São João, a fragment of an early Christian tomb cover decorated with a mosaic, dating from the 5th century, was found. The fragment is considered the only mosaic with an explicitly Christian motif found in Portugal. Twelve graves of different dates were found around the chapel. The mosaic fragment and the graves each provide their own clues to the archaeological history of the place.

Basketry and Cultural Transmission

Basketry using piorna brings another aspect of the cultural heritage into focus. It is considered a traditional art whose origins are traced back to the Castreja culture. The knowledge is passed down within families from older women to younger women. The tradition therefore involves not only the craft itself, but also the direct transmission of knowledge between generations.

The ethnographic group “As Cesteiras de Frende” emerged from the basket-weaving tradition. Its formation is another point of reference for this tradition, alongside the transmission of knowledge within families.

Festa da Padroeira

The Festa da Padroeira, in honour of Santa Maria de Frende, is celebrated every year on 7 October. Its highlight is the procession in honour of the patron saint on the Sunday closest to 7 October. The festival therefore has a fixed date, while the Sunday procession falls on a date that varies according to the calendar.

If you would like to combine your stay with the Festa da Padroeira, check the exact date of the procession in advance. The annual feast day and the Sunday procession highlight are two different dates to bear in mind when planning your trip.

Location and Landscape of the Douro

Frende lies on the right bank of the Douro. The area forms a promontory above the river, with its outer section elevated on a cone-shaped hill. The landscape is also steeply hilly, with fertile valleys.

The Frende Boundary Viewpoint is on the EN 108 at kilometre 96.950.

You can therefore consider Frende for a stay based on its cultural and scenic features.
