Felgueiras offers something for travelers with different interests: Benedictine heritage, archaeological interpretation, walks and regional cuisine. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can first consider whether cultural history, outdoor activities or culinary traditions should be the focus of your trip. The following places and specialties bring these options to life.

Monastery history and culture in the municipality

Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Pombeiro was one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in Entre-Douro-e-Minho. In 2023, the Centro Interpretativo do Mosteiro de Pombeiro opened in the former Sala do Recibo. This brings together the monastery’s significance and a dedicated place for interpreting its history; the former Sala do Recibo refers to the rooms where the center opened.

The Rota do Românico also provides a framework for exploring the architectural history of the municipality of Felgueiras: it includes five architectural monuments there. Casa das Torres is an emblematic building in the municipality and is classified as so-called Brazilian architecture. It was built approximately between 1915 and 1918. This approximate period places the building in time, while the architectural classification offers another way to explore it.

Another cultural and research landmark in the municipality is the Centro Interpretativo e Gabinete de Apoio Arqueológico da Villa Romana de Sendim. The center also includes a museum area devoted to Povoado de Cimalha. The Centro Interpretativo da Villa Romana de Sendim opened to the public in 2003 and offers educational activities through its education service and museum areas. Its name refers to Villa Romana de Sendim; the area devoted to Povoado de Cimalha adds another specific point of reference to the archaeological theme.

Trails, views and activities

For a walking stage, the Caminho de Torres offers a clearly defined route: the section between Amarante’s historic center and the city of Felgueiras is 20.5 km long. This figure describes the length of this stage. At Miradouro de Santa Quitéria, by contrast, the view is of the city of Felgueiras: the viewpoint offers a panorama of the city. You can walk along the caminho das capelinhas and through the avenues.

Another activity is available at the free-to-use trial biking facility in the Zona Desportiva de Felgueiras. It is intended for trial biking and opened on December 14, 2013. Different ways to get active are therefore available: a stage with a specified length, trial biking and walks at the viewpoint. This can help you tailor your stay to the activities you want, without treating these options as interchangeable.

Regional cuisine with different time references

The Pão-de-Ló de Margaride recipe has been preserved since 1730; the cake was also served at the table of the Portuguese royal family. Bacalhau à Felgueiras has a different time reference: this traditional dish was created in 2019 by chefs from Felgueiras. The two specialties thus bring together a long-preserved recipe tradition and a dish with a more recent, specified year of creation. If you are interested in the culinary side of your trip, the two dishes offer different ways to explore the history of local cuisine.
