Magrelos offers several distinct points of interest to consider when planning a stay: sacred architecture, the chapel at Casa da Seara, and the landscape around the Douro. You can consider these separately when choosing a hotel for your trip. Igreja Paroquial de Magrelos represents the architecture; at Casa da Seara, a historic chapel and its riverside location come together. Baloiço Nossa Senhora da Luz adds a reported view towards the Douro to this perspective.

Getting there from Porto

From Porto, take the A4 to the parish of Bem Viver. Turn off at the Marco de Canaveses exit; from the toll plaza, continue for approximately 18 km. This distance is approximate. Check the current route before setting off, and bear in mind that conditions and travel times may change.

Church architecture in Magrelos

Igreja Paroquial de Magrelos is probably a 16th-century building. At the main portal and side door, round-arched forms meet chamfered edges and diamond friezes. Three distinct details stand out across the two openings: the arch shape, the treatment of the edges, and the diamond ornament. The round arch describes the shape of the upper section; the chamfered edges describe its finish, while the diamond friezes provide an ornamental detail.

The chancel contains a gilded carved altarpiece, probably made in the 19th century. The interior walls are covered with blue-and-white patterned tiles. Different areas and materials are therefore set alongside one another: arches and friezes at the openings, tiles on the interior walls, and gilded carving in the chancel. The form, ornament, and furnishings offer different points of reference for understanding the church’s architecture.

The chapel at Casa da Seara

The chapel at Casa da Seara is dedicated to Senhora Sant' Ana and dates from 1693. Casa da Seara is located on the River Douro. For orientation, this brings together a specific date and a distinct landscape setting. The dedication and year of construction also give the chapel a clear historical context, different from the architectural details of the parish church.

Several points of reference can be considered chronologically: the parish church probably dates from the 16th century, the chapel at Casa da Seara from 1693, and the carved altarpiece was probably made in the 19th century. This means that sacred architecture in Magrelos spans more than one period. Note the different levels of certainty: the dates of the parish church and the altarpiece are both given as probable.

Baloiço Nossa Senhora da Luz

A description published in 2021 placed Baloiço Nossa Senhora da Luz in Parque do Divino Salvador, next to Igreja de Magrelos. It also mentioned views towards the River Douro. This adds a landscape perspective to the cultural and historical points of interest, without equating the buildings with the river view. If you include the swing in your plans, check its current condition before your visit.
