Tradition and Cultural History
The Rancho Folclórico de São Pedro da Raimonda was founded on December 8, 1982. The group preserves local cultural heritage by researching, collecting, and performing traditional costumes, dances, songs, and traditions from the period between 1880 and 1910. The dates refer to different periods: 1982 is the year the Rancho was founded, while 1880 to 1910 is the historical period represented by its repertoire. For travelers interested in regional culture, this offers a specific insight into the subjects the group explores.
Sacred Architecture in Raimonda
The Igreja Matriz de Raimonda was inaugurated in 1710. Its capela-mor, or chancel, is richly decorated in the Renaissance and Baroque styles. According to Padre Alexandrino Brochado, the Igreja Matriz also houses the oldest painting of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Portugal.
The Capela de Santo Amaro in Raimonda was built in 1632 near the source of the Rio Ferreira. It therefore dates from an earlier period than the Igreja Matriz, which was inaugurated in 1710. The first festival of each year in the municipality of Paços de Ferreira is held at the chapel on January 15. If this festival is important to your travel plans, check the latest event dates in advance.
Other chapels also offer insight into the architectural history of Raimonda and its surroundings. Work on the Capela de Santo Cristo in the Raimonda cemetery is said to have been completed in 1899. In Parada, within the Raimonda area, the Capela da Virgem Maria opened for worship in 1721. It is also known as Nossa Senhora do Desterro and Capela de Jesus, Maria e José. These different names refer to the same chapel.
The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Alívio in Raimonda, attached to the Casa de Rosende, was built in 1884 at the initiative of D. Engrácia Ferreira Neto Freire de Vasconcelos. Its construction date, its connection to the house, and its initiator provide a precise historical picture of the building. Together with the older chapels, they help distinguish different periods of construction without conflating the individual places or their histories.
Cemetery, Architecture, and Parks
The Cemitério de Raimonda is considered to be of great artistic interest. The cemetery is home to the Capela-Jazigo da Fidalga de Rosende, whose façade is richly decorated and made entirely of marble. Another glimpse into architectural history can be found at the Casa da Torre: it is one of the houses and manor houses in Raimonda that reflect the economic prosperity and artistic tastes of local patrician families from the 17th to the 19th century.
The Parque da Raimonda offers a different kind of point of reference: it is listed as one of the other parks in Paços de Ferreira. The Parque de Lazer de Raimonda includes a children's and youth park. As facilities may change, check the latest information before visiting. A monument dedicated to São Pedro stands in Jardim da Igreja on Rua de São Pedro in Raimonda; it was inaugurated on May 31, 2025.
