If you are considering Canelas as a destination for a stay, three themes offer a practical guide: the Igreja Paroquial de Canelas, the Capela de São Sebastião and the landscape of Serra da Boneca. Cultural events in a range of formats add to these attractions.

Sacred architecture in Canelas

The Igreja Paroquial de Canelas has a rectangular floor plan. Its layout includes a nave, chancel and sacristy; the bell tower is positioned on the right. These terms distinguish the individual areas: the nave is the main space, the chancel is the liturgical area by the altar, and the sacristy is an adjoining room. The floor plan describes the shape of the building, while the tower’s position and the division of its spaces show different aspects of its architecture.

The Capela de São Sebastião is a 16th-century chapel with a rectangular floor plan and a single room. Its main façade has a bell gable with a round arch and a doorway with a straight lintel. The round arch appears as a curved upper outline on the bell gable; the straight lintel forms the horizontal top of the doorway. Unlike the parish church, which has several distinct interior areas, the chapel is notable for its single room and the design of its main façade. For travellers interested in sacred buildings, the chapel’s 16th-century date provides a point of reference; the parish church can be compared by its division of spaces and the position of its tower on the right.

Culture and events

The Canas – Festival Cultural de Canelas took place from 5 to 9 August 2026 at Praceta da Igreja in Canelas. The programme included music, theatre, dance, food, crafts, traditional games and activities for all age groups; admission was free. The festival dates given here refer to August 2026.

Another event format was the 1.ª Rota do Asfalto, a social outing for motorcycles and cars. It started at Praceta da Igreja in Canelas. Together with the festival, this example shows a different kind of event: a group outing rather than a programme of music, theatre, dance and other activities.

Canelas and Serra da Boneca

In the municipality of Penafiel, Serra da Boneca includes Sebolido, Rio Mau, Canelas and Capelas, among other places. Canelas is therefore part of a regional landscape that extends beyond the architecture of the town itself. From a point near a wind turbine in Serra da Boneca, the view stretches to the Douro. This landscape offers a point of reference alongside the architectural forms of the parish church and chapel: here the view takes in the wider surroundings, while there the focus is on floor plans, spatial divisions and façade details.
