Valpedre: Agritourism and Roman History
Accommodation in Valpedre
This clearly identifies a type of accommodation. For further trip planning, you can also consider cultural themes and trails. They differ according to whether the focus is on a settlement’s history, a group of monuments, or specific trail features.
Castro de Monte Mozinho
Located near Valpedre, Castro de Monte Mozinho is a fortified hilltop settlement at an elevation of 408 metres. It offers sweeping views towards Serra do MarĂŁo and Montemuro. Its elevation and the distant views mentioned also place the site in its landscape context. The Castro dates to the Roman period: it was founded in the 1st century AD, and settlement continued until the 5th century. This dating therefore covers both its beginnings and a period of settlement spanning several centuries. The site includes two rings of walls and a settled area of about 22 hectares. These different measurements describe different aspects: 408 metres indicates the elevation, while about 22 hectares indicates the extent of the settled area. Together, the fortifications, location, and settlement period make the Castro a specific point of interest for travellers interested in Roman settlements.
Monuments and Trails
The NecrĂłpole MegalĂtica da Cruz da Giesteira is a group of megalithic monuments. Unlike the fortified Castro, the focus here is on a group of monuments rather than an inhabited settlement. The two archaeological subjects therefore differ in form: a Roman hilltop settlement on one hand, and megalithic monuments on the other. “Megalithic” describes monuments made from large stones. The term describes their construction, while “group” refers to considering several monuments together. This makes the name NecrĂłpole MegalĂtica da Cruz da Giesteira easier to understand in two parts: it refers to the form of the monuments and to their being grouped together as an archaeological site.
The Via Sacra begins at the parish church and ends at the Capela do Senhor do Calvário. For this route, both the starting point and destination are specified. The “Trilho Histórico e Panorâmico em Penafiel” offers a different experience: it runs along sections of natural and paved paths, including asphalt sections, and passes through wooded areas and open fields. The two route descriptions answer different questions about orientation: the Via Sacra focuses on its endpoints, while the Trilho focuses on trail surfaces and landscape sections.
