Vila do Conde can be explored from different perspectives: its coastline and protected areas, as well as its lace-making, seafaring and architectural history. At Praia de Vila do Conde, a sandy beach stretches for about six kilometres, almost uninterrupted, to the mouth of the Rio Ave. Visitors wishing to combine their stay with experiences in nature and culture will find a range of points of interest here.

Coast and protected landscapes

The Paisagem Protegida Regional do Litoral de Vila do Conde and the Reserva Ornitológica de Mindelo encompass dunes, beaches, waterways, wetlands, forests, agricultural land and rock outcrops. The heritage of this landscape includes biological and geological aspects, as well as archaeological and cultural ones. Coastal areas and other habitats sit alongside traces of human use and history.

The PR3 Castro de São Paio route follows the coast through both protected areas. It starts at the Centro de Interpretação do Castro de São Paio and then leads to the remains of a pre-Christian maritime settlement. Separate from this are the guided explorations offered by CMIA Vila do Conde in the intertidal zone, along the coast and in the protected landscape. The centre also offers exhibitions and environmental education workshops. Praia Azul is described as the beach most sought after by surfers in Vila do Conde.

Lace-making and museums

The tradition of making Rendas de Bilros in Vila do Conde dates back at least to the 16th century. The permanent exhibition at the Museu das Rendas de Bilros features both traditional lace from Vila do Conde and contemporary works. Visitors can watch lacemakers demonstrate their technique; there is also a school that teaches it. The craft is presented through both its long local history and its contemporary practice.

The permanent exhibition at the Museu de Vila do Conde offers a broader perspective across time: it explores the history of the area in 19 rooms and covers periods beginning around 200,000 years ago. The Museu dos Bombeiros focuses on something different, displaying old fire engines, uniforms, pennants, photographs and documents relating to the history of Vila do Conde’s fire brigade. The different collections make it possible to focus on natural and local history, a particular craft or the history of an institution.

Architectural history and maritime heritage

A visit by King Manuel to Vila do Conde in 1502 provided significant impetus for the construction of the Igreja Matriz de Vila do Conde. Another point in time is marked by the Igreja do Convento de Santa Clara e Túmulos dos Fundadores: work on this monument began in 1318. It features Gothic, Manueline, Baroque and Rococo elements. The founders’ chapel contains Manueline tombs and a Rococo organ.

The history of seafaring is also present at several locations. The Alfândega Régia – Museu de Construção Naval is housed in a 15th-century building on the Vila do Conde waterfront. A replica of a 16th-century carrack has been moored in the Rio Ave since 2007. The permanent exhibition “Com o risco se faz um barco” is housed in the Casa do Barco.

The Casa de José Régio preserves the residence the poet chose as his home after retirement; it opened to the public on 17 September 1975. Visiting hours are listed as Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Check the hours before your visit. This makes it possible to tailor a stay to different interests, such as architecture and building history, the maritime collection, or the poet’s life and work.

Regional sweets and religious traditions

The centuries-old tradition of convent confectionery is associated with the convents of Santa Clara and Vairão. Vila do Conde’s noted specialities include Beijos de Freira, Melindres, Pastéis de Santa Clara, Rebuçados de Ovos, Rosquinhas, Sapatetas and Sopa Dourada. Another traditional sweet is Rosca de pão doce, also known as Rosca de folar de Páscoa. It remains part of the tradition in Labruge, Mindelo, Modivas, Vila Chã and Vilar.

Religious customs also shape local tradition. The Procissão de São João takes place on the birthday of John the Baptist, is one of the highlights of the religious patron-saint celebrations, and passes through the main streets of the historic centre. Two pilgrimage routes to Santiago also pass through the Concelho de Vila do Conde. Depending on your interests, you can add religious traditions, regional cuisine, or architectural and maritime history to your visit.
