Minde – Polje, Minderico and Weaving History
Accommodation in Minde
Minde brings together a distinctive landscape and a local history in which language, weaving, painting and music play a notable role. The Polje de Minde shapes the view of the surrounding area, while historic buildings and cultural institutions reveal other facets of the town. You can get to know Minde through a range of interests: nature, crafts or art.
The landscape around the Polje de Minde
The Polje de Minde is a shallow depression measuring 4 km long and 1.8 km wide. It floods when rainfall is heavier. The depression is fed by four springs: Mindinho, Contenda, Poio and Olho de Mira. Rainfall and spring inflows are therefore both part of understanding this landscape feature. Its extent and periodically changing water levels make the polje a defining natural feature of a stay in Minde.
The formation known as “Lagoa de Minde” is the most significant of its kind in the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros and also the only one of its kind in Portugal. This classification refers to the formation and its place within the natural park, as well as to its uniqueness in Portugal.
Historic townscape and museum
Narrow, winding streets shape Minde’s historic townscape. The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Assunção was founded in 1623. Another cultural landmark is the iron bandstand, dating from 1933, which recalls the town’s cultural and artistic life. Casa Açores is also part of the town’s history: the building dates from 1926 and houses the Museu de Aguarela Roque Gameiro.
The museum features changing exhibitions and includes a space for drawing and watercolour painting, as well as a documentation centre. A 2024 report described a large part of artist Roque Gameiro’s works as belonging to the museum collection. If you are planning a museum visit, it is worth checking the current programme.
Minderico and the history of weaving
The history of wool processing in Minde goes back a long way. Records from 1802 note that wool was processed there and that buréis, panos de varas, alforges and blankets were woven or made for troops, foundries and the army and navy arsenals. These historical products offer a concrete glimpse into the manufacturing of the time and its customers.
Minderico’s origins are also linked to wool processing and the sale of blankets and other woollen goods. It was a coded language used by market traders and was probably spoken from the 18th century until almost the middle of the 20th century. Minderico is thus part of both Minde’s linguistic and textile history. A weaving workshop in the town serves as a centre for interpreting and making the “Manta de Minde”—two aspects that go hand in hand when exploring the craft.
Cultural events and stages
Events also have specific ties to Minde. The Festival Materiais Diversos was established in the town in 2009. JAZZMINDE took place in a disused former textile factory with an indoor and an outdoor stage.
This gives you a varied picture of the town as you plan your trip: the Polje offers a view of a distinctive landscape, while Minderico and weaving tell the story of language and craftsmanship. Historic buildings, the museum and the stages add art and culture to these themes. The aspects that interest you most can help you shape your stay in Minde.
