Alcochete offers different ways to plan your trip: walking trails and birdwatching, historic churches and museum exhibitions, as well as links to traditional navigation on the Tagus. Consider whether you would prefer to experience nature, learn about the town’s history or plan a boat trip during your stay.

Nature Trails, Salt Pans and Birdwatching

The Complexo de Salinas do Samouco is a natural heritage site that you can explore along walking trails. On the Flamingo Trail, you can observe birds in the estuary, including flamingos and herons. The trail is 4 km long and has a low difficulty level. Check local conditions before setting out.

At Sítio das Hortas, you can observe waterbirds and salt-tolerant plants characteristic of salt marshes. The Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo also includes areas within the municipality of Alcochete. You can observe birds on the Flamingo Trail, and waterbirds and salt-tolerant salt-marsh plants at Sítio das Hortas; the larger protected area of the Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo also includes areas within the municipality of Alcochete.

Churches, Museum and Local History

The Igreja de São João Baptista is located on Largo de São João in the centre of Alcochete. The building dates from the 15th century and is associated with Infante D. Fernando. By decree dated 16 June 1910, the church was declared a National Monument. Its location, construction date and protected status offer concrete points of reference as you explore Alcochete’s history through its townscape.

The Municipal Museum of Alcochete has two permanent exhibition areas: the Núcleo Sede and the Núcleo de Arte Sacra. The Núcleo Sede presents important moments in the town’s history and Alcochete’s close relationship with the Tagus. The Núcleo de Arte Sacra is housed in the Igreja da Misericórdia de Alcochete. The church is considered the most important testament to the period of prosperity Alcochete experienced as a riverside town in the 16th century.

At the Núcleo de Arte Sacra, you can see paintings dating from the 16th to the 19th century. Highlights include the main altarpiece and a Misericórdia processional banner, considered one of the oldest in Portugal. The exhibition thus brings together sacred artworks from several centuries with the history of the church that houses the Núcleo.

Another visible testament to the town’s history is the pair of disused windmills in Cerradinho da Praia, on the western side of Alcochete.

Tagus Traditions and Boat Trips

The Bote Leão is a traditional Tagus vessel associated with Alcochete’s maritime heritage. On tourist leisure trips with the Alcatejo, visitors learn about traditional boats and navigation practices of the past. The two vessels offer different ways to discover the town’s maritime traditions.

The Alcatejo offers boat trips on the Tagus along the waterfront from Alcochete to Lisbon. Confirm the arrangements locally if you would like to include this trip in your plans. The Alcatejo is also used during various traditional festivals, including the nighttime procession on the water in honour of Nossa Senhora da Vida during the Barrete Verde and Alcochete Salt Pans festivals.

Activities at Sítio das Hortas

The Pólo de Animação Ambiental do Sítio das Hortas offers donkey rides exclusively for children under 12; advance booking is required. Advance booking is also required to visit the donkey stable, where you can have direct contact with the animals. During a stable visit, visitors can learn about the daily work and care involved. The activities therefore have different focuses: the rides are centred on riding, while the stable visit focuses on contact with the animals and learning about their care.
