For planning your trip, Pegões can be viewed through two themes: the landscape and the Rota de Santo Isidro, and the history of settlement, architecture and art. This can help you decide whether to make the natural setting or cultural heritage the focus of your stay.

Landscape and a break along the Rota de Santo Isidro

Pinhal das Sesmarias is a dense pine forest along the Rota de Santo Isidro. The Barragem de Pegões is a suitable place to stop for a break and a picnic. This gives you two distinct starting points for planning: the forest as a defining landscape feature, and the reservoir as a place to rest outdoors.

If you are interested in the route, you can consider these features separately: the pine forest represents the landscape, while the Barragem offers a specific reason to stop for a break and a picnic.

The Colonato and the history of agriculture

The Colonato Agrícola de Pegões Velhos is made up of three settlements. Roads, irrigation systems and waterways are central elements of the settlement layout. The first two settlement centres contain 18 buildings for commerce, education, leisure, worship and social care. The site can therefore be understood through more than its individual buildings: the layout of the settlements and the infrastructure are also part of its character.

When looking at the Colonato, it is worth considering these aspects separately. The three settlements describe its spatial layout, while the roads, irrigation systems and waterways are important elements of the site. The 18 buildings, in turn, represent a range of community functions, from education and commerce to worship and social care.

Another historical perspective concerns the Colónia de Santo Isidro de Pegões: it was the only project of its kind to be built south of the Tagus. This places the agricultural story in a wider regional context, without losing sight of the Colonato’s specific features.

Churches, art and historic buildings

The architecture of the Igreja de St.º Isidro de Pegões differs from the design conventions prevailing at the time. Its single-nave interior contains a large wall fresco of Santo Isidro by Severo Portela Júnior. The Igreja Paroquial de Pegões has an abstract, colourful triptych by Artur Bual on its main altar.

The two churches offer different points of interest: at St.º Isidro, the architecture and wall fresco are defining features; in the Igreja Paroquial, it is the work on the main altar. The Igreja das Faias also has a work by Artur Bual, dated 1965. If you are interested in art, you can look out for the painter’s various works without treating them as identical.

The Monumento de Homenagem à Agricultura is made from retired agricultural machinery and individual parts, and is associated with Artur Bual. Its name and materials give the ensemble a distinct connection to agriculture. The Fontanário de Pegões offers a different architectural focus: this fountain is a Baroque structure from the 18th century.

Wine and visits

The Cooperativa Agrícola de Pegões is recognised nationally and internationally, and has received more than 500 awards and prizes at prestigious international wine competitions. Visitor activities include wine tastings and guided tours. Tours require registration 48 hours in advance; they are currently suspended temporarily because of internal renovation work. If a tour is important to your travel plans, check in advance whether it has resumed.

Pegões therefore offers a range of themes to help you choose: nature and a possible break along the Rota de Santo Isidro, the structure of the Colonato, different examples of church art, and the history of agriculture. These highlights can help you decide the purpose of your trip and tailor your search for a hotel in Pegões accordingly.
