Castelo de Palmela has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. From here, you can take in views of Setúbal, the Sado Estuary, the Tróia Peninsula, the Tagus and the Lisbon coast. The castle also tells the story of the Order of Santiago de Espada: from 1443 until its dissolution in 1834, it was the order’s permanent headquarters. In Palmela, views and history sit side by side.

Castle, Churches and Historic Collections

Within the original walls of Castelo de Palmela is Igreja de Santiago, a National Monument dating from the second half of the 15th century. It has seasonal opening hours: from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 20:00; from the last Sunday in October to the last Sunday in March, it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. Check the opening hours before your visit.

The town’s churches each have their own character. Igreja de S. Pedro dates from the 16th century; its remarkable Baroque tilework depicts scenes from the life of its patron saint. Igreja da Misericórdia is in the historic centre and combines its 16th-century origins with 17th-century tiles and Baroque carvings in the Joanine style. Visitors interested in sacred art will find both tile panels and carved woodwork to look for on their walk.

Several exhibition spaces offer further insights. The Reserva Visitável Escultura S. Tiago features stone and wooden sculptures from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. A small exhibition about the Almenara event is housed in the Torre de Menagem. The Espaço Cidadão houses a permanent exhibition of archaeological artefacts recovered during archaeological work to renovate the building. Together, these collections offer different ways to explore art, history and archaeological finds.

Walking Trails to Archaeological Sites

The “Serra do Louro, Palmela Arqueológica” walking trail leads to Castro de Chibanes, the best-preserved Chalcolithic ruins, and Alto da Queimada, a settlement from the Arab period. The two destinations represent different historical periods, which you can discover along the same named trail. The Serra do Louro landscape also includes old windmills and archaeological sites.
