Historic Centre and Church
Amora’s historic centre developed around two focal points: the parish church of Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte Sião and the waterfront. Agriculture, along with river and sea navigation, shaped the population and its activities there. A religious landmark and a way of life shaped by the water thus sit side by side. When planning your trip, this distinction offers a practical framework if you are interested in both local history and the waterfront.
Several periods can be distinguished at the Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Monte Sião. A tombstone from 1578 and an inscription on the pulpit dated 1594 indicate that the church dates back at least to the 16th century. It was rebuilt in 1757, following the earthquake of 1 November 1755. The older inscriptions point to the church’s earlier history, while 1757 marks the later reconstruction. The dates therefore refer to different stages in its history. The two earlier references are 16 years apart; both predate the 1757 reconstruction.
Local legends, traditions and picturesque events also contribute to Amora’s historic character. They add the town’s oral traditions to the story told by its architecture and dates.
Park and Waterfront Activities
The Parque Municipal do Serrado is a specific place to take a break surrounded by greenery. Shady picnic areas with tables and benches are set beneath densely leafed trees. The park also has walking paths, a large lawn for activities and games, a play and recreation area, and toilet facilities. These amenities offer options both for a picnic break and for outdoor activities.
The Centro Náutico de Amora supports nautical activities in Baía do Seixal. It was equipped by the Clube de Canoagem de Amora and the Associação Naval Amorense to support the development of canoeing and sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, swimming and triathlon. Further initiatives were planned for windsurfing and dragon boat racing. New ramps at the Centro Náutico improve access to the water and complement its nautical focus.
An environmental education walk described in 2018 followed Amora’s waterfront and included guidance and orientation. If you would like to plan this guided walk, check in advance whether it is currently running and when.
For planning your stay, the attractions differ in focus: the church and local traditions offer a historical perspective, the Parque Municipal do Serrado is suited to picnics and activities in the greenery, and the Centro Náutico focuses on nautical pursuits. Check the current date of the guided walk separately.
