Seixal can be explored through several themes: BaĂa do Seixal on the Tagus estuary, maritime and river traditions, and industrial and architectural history. A seasonal trip on the Tagus is something different from a look at the history of Mundet or the architecture of the Quintas.

BaĂa do Seixal and its wetlands

Baía do Seixal lies in the Tagus estuary. The bay and its waterfronts are included in Portugal’s National Ecological Reserve, the Reserva Ecológica Nacional. Together, they form a wetland of great national and European importance, with high biodiversity and exceptional landscape quality. Those looking to understand Seixal through its landscape will find the destination’s natural highlights here. The bay therefore represents a different facet from the boats, industrial history and historic Quintas mentioned later: the focus here is on the estuary, shoreline and wetlands.

The cork industry and NĂșcleo da Mundet

NĂșcleo da Mundet is located in the former Mundet cork factory in Seixal. Mundet was one of Portugal’s largest companies in the cork sector. This site therefore brings together the former use of the factory grounds and the history of a major company in Portugal’s cork industry. It offers a specific perspective on the city’s history, distinct from viewing BaĂa as a natural area. If you would like to include industrial history in your travel plans, Mundet represents the cork sector; the boats and NĂșcleo Naval, by contrast, lead to maritime and river-related themes.

Maritime heritage and trips on the Tagus

The Ecomuseu Municipal do Seixal encompasses maritime and river heritage connected to the Tagus estuary. Its traditional boats are available to the public for trips on the Tagus approximately every year from April to October; the period depends on weather conditions. Check the trip dates before making specific plans, as both the approximate season and the weather are important factors.

The Bote de Fragata BaĂa do Seixal dates from 1914. This means that 1914 refers to the boat itself, while April to October is the approximate period for the trips. NĂșcleo Naval also has an exhibition space for permanent exhibitions. The maritime themes therefore include a seasonal trip, a boat with a specific date, and a space for permanent exhibitions—different points of interest to help you plan your stay.

Quintas, water engineering and azulejos

Quinta da Fidalga has a tidal lake, considered a rare or almost unique monument of Portuguese water engineering. This brings a specific hydraulic structure into focus, while BaĂa is characterized primarily as an estuary and wetland. Quinta da Trindade offers a different highlight: its main building houses a collection of approximately 8,000 azulejos, or glazed ceramic tiles.

Quinta da Trindade also includes a building in Azinheira, Seixal, classified as an ImĂłvel de Interesse PĂșblico; the classification was made under Decree No. 516/71 of 22 November. The details refer to different aspects: the collection of azulejos in the main building and the formal protected status of a building in Azinheira. Together with the tidal lake at Quinta da Fidalga, these offer visitors different points of interest in water engineering, architecture or tile art.
