Cabreiro: Architecture, Trails and Water

Cabreiro brings together several distinct themes for a stay: the Ponte de Cabreiro is classified as a Property of Public Interest, the Trilho do Ramiscal passes through named places on its way to Branda do Rodrigo, and the Rio Cabreiro cuts through a secluded, rugged valley. If you are looking for a hotel in Cabreiro, you can consider whether you are particularly interested in architectural forms and heritage, a specific trail route, or the river landscape and local folklore.

The Ponte de Cabreiro and Its Arches

The Ponte de Cabreiro is classified as a Property of Public Interest in the localities of Sobreira and Igreja, in the parish of Cabreiro, the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez and the district of Viana do Castelo. It has two arches of unequal size: a larger round arch and a smaller pointed arch. This brings two clearly distinct forms together on the same bridge.

The round arch follows a curved line, while the pointed arch comes to a point at the top. The comparison therefore concerns both size and shape. For those interested in architecture, the particular appeal lies in the contrast between two different arch forms on a single structure; the heritage designation and the specific architectural feature complement one another.

Trail Route and Project Plans

The Trilho do Ramiscal follows a paved path from Vilela Seca through Lordelo to Branda do Rodrigo. The sequence of places gives the trail a clear structure: Vilela Seca is the starting point, Lordelo lies along the route, and Branda do Rodrigo is the destination. Branda consists of a small floodplain. The Trilho thus connects a named sequence of places with a distinctive landscape feature at the end of the route.

A separate project plan concerned the Ecovia de Cabreiro a Loureda, a tourist trail. The project, scheduled for completion on 31 March 2021, envisaged a route of 1,850 metres. It was to follow the right bank of the Vez and connect Poço das Caldeiras in Loureda with S. Sebastião in Bouça do Eido, in Cabreiro.

The distinction is important when considering the trail-related information: the Trilho do Ramiscal is described as a paved path with a sequence of places, while the length, bank and connecting points of the Ecovia refer to a planned route. This makes it possible to distinguish the described trail route from the project’s key details.

Valley, Pools and Local Folklore

The Rio Cabreiro cuts through a secluded, rugged valley, where it forms pools. The river valley offers a distinct landscape focus alongside the bridge and trail routes: here, the valley’s shape and the pools formed by the river take centre stage.

The Poço da Ola, also known as Gola, is also located on the Cabreiro River. It is associated with deep, mysterious waters and legendary significance. The “Lenda do Velho de Cabreiro” (Legend of the Old Man of Cabreiro) is associated with both the parish of Cabreiro and the Poço da Ola. Thus, landscape and local storytelling come together at a named place: the Poço as a body of water and the legend as a narrative connection to Cabreiro.
