In Montaria, hiking trails and cultural heritage offer different focal points for a trip. Four PR hiking trails vary in length, and difficulty levels are also provided for two of them. The parish church, mills and waterfalls add architectural history, traditional food processing and geology to the routes. This lets you decide whether to plan your trip around trail length first or around a cultural and landscape theme.

Compare hiking trails by distance

The PR1 hiking trail, “Trilho da Montanha Sagrada,” is 18.7 km long and starts and ends at Largo do Souto in Montaria. The PR2, “Trilho dos Pastores,” covers 14.8 km and is rated moderate. At 4.3 km, the PR3, “Trilho do Fojo do Lobo,” is the shortest of the four routes listed. The PR5, “Trilho do Pincho,” covers 9.7 km and is rated easy. The distances therefore range from 4.3 to 18.7 km; the difference between PR2 and PR5 is 5.1 km.

At 14.8 km, PR2 is longer than PR5, which is 9.7 km; their ratings also differ: PR2 is moderate, while PR5 is easy. A shared start and finish point is also specified for PR1. Take distance and rating into account when planning, and check local trail conditions before hiking. This helps keep the different details about each route clear when choosing one.

The parish church and mills as cultural themes

Montaria’s parish church was built in 1714. It is a Mannerist church with Baroque features: the two terms describe different architectural aspects of the same building. The church also contains miniature nativity scenes. Its construction date, stylistic features and nativity scenes thus offer several specific starting points for exploring Montaria’s cultural heritage.

The Moinhos da Costa mills are notable for their communal ownership and traditional food processing. They used a communal ownership system and ground maize into flour for broa. The two aspects are connected, but describe different things: one concerns ownership, the other how the mills were used. Those interested in the history of traditional processing will find a different perspective on the area here than in the architecture of the parish church.

Waterfalls and Serra d’Arga

The most notable waterfalls at Cascatas da Ferida Má, also known as Cascatas do Pincho, are in Montaria, among quartzite layers. The reference to the rock adds a geological perspective to the landscape theme. Alongside the hiking trails, this makes the geological context of the waterfalls a distinct focus, in addition to the history of the church and mills.

Another point of interest is Porta do Sítio da Serra d’Arga. The interpretation centre aims to present, enhance and promote the environmental and cultural heritage of Serra d’Arga. It draws attention to the natural and cultural heritage of Serra d’Arga, while the parish church and mills are specific to Montaria. Together, these different themes show how a trip can be planned around trail length, architecture, traditional processing or landscape.
