Boticas: Nature, Culture and Gastronomy
Accommodation in Boticas
Boticas between Barroso and the natural landscape
Boticas lies in the mountainous, rugged region of Barroso. The destination brings together this landscape, an exhibition of Gallaecian warrior statues, a natural area in Boticas Parque and culinary traditions. For planning your trip, it is important to distinguish between the town and the municipality: Boticas Parque is within the municipality of Boticas, not in the town centre. It is therefore a separate point of interest within the municipality and should not be confused with the town centre.
The Rio Beça runs through Boticas Parque. The park preserves riverside woodlands, oak stands and habitats of high natural value. The river, forest and other habitats shape the park’s natural character and complement the destination’s cultural and culinary themes.
Guided Tours and Cycling Options
Boticas Parque offers guided interpretive tours. These include visits to a watermill, Ponte Pedrinha, the Rio Beça and other areas of the park. The tour connects specific built and natural features of the park. Advance booking is required for these tours.
The park covers more than 60 hectares and can be explored by mountain bike along its trails. Bikes are also available for hire for visits to nearby villages. The cycling options have different focuses: rides along the park trails, on the one hand, and village visits by bike, on the other. Advance booking is required for these options, too.
Another guided experience combines tastings with a 1.5-kilometre walk. It includes Mel de Barroso, smoked products, Bola de Carne, rye bread and natural herbal infusions. If you would like to combine Boticas’s culinary side with a walk, its length is specified. Advance booking is also required for this guided experience.
Sculptures and Wine Tradition
The Centro Europeu de Documentação e Interpretação da Escultura Castreja (CEDIEC) in Boticas features replicas of the four Gallaecian warrior statues found at Outeiro Lesenho in its permanent exhibition. The exhibition provides a distinct cultural highlight alongside the park tours and cycling options.
Boticas is also associated with Vinho dos Mortos. After bottling, this wine is buried in the ground, where it ferments in the dark for about a year. The Repositório Histórico do Vinho dos Mortos near Granja presents the production process. It is within the municipality of Boticas, but not in the town centre. This distinguishes the location of the repository from that of the CEDIEC in Boticas.
Regional Culinary Connections
Boticas is also associated with Barrosã beef, which has a protected designation of origin. This food tradition is distinct from the special production method used for Vinho dos Mortos and from the tastings at Boticas Parque. Together, these themes show different aspects of regional cuisine: beef associated with Boticas and protected origin, wine made using a special fermentation method, and guided tastings in the park.
Boticas therefore offers several specific reasons to choose it as a destination: the permanent exhibition of warrior statues, nature and activities at Boticas Parque, and its culinary traditions. Discover more destinations: Granja
