The vast expanse of water at Albufeira de Paradela shapes the landscape of Outeiro. It is complemented by the green Prados de Lima and a stand of native oak trees. This gives you several specific points to consider when planning your trip: the reservoir landscape, GR50 Stage 18, and the area’s rural architectural and cultural history.

Reservoir Landscape and Trails Through the Beredo Valley

GR50 Stage 18 starts in Outeiro and follows rural paths for about nine kilometres through the Beredo Valley and its extensive oak forest. After leaving Outeiro, the route crosses the Rio Meão at Moinho do Canto. At around nine kilometres, the route can be considered as a standalone planning item. Before setting out, check the current route and trail conditions, as routes or trail conditions may change.

Moinho do Canto is a preserved small watermill that is no longer in operation. In the past, it channelled water from the Rio Meão to a hydroelectric power station via a levada. The route therefore passes a place connected both to the river and to its former use.

Castro, Village Centre and Rural Heritage

The Castro de Outeiro is listed as a place of interest. When the road from Outeiro to Parada do Rio opened, prehistoric gold torcs were found at the foot of the castro, near the Rio Cávado. The find connects the named archaeological site with a specific part of the area’s history and the riverside landscape.

Several buildings in the preserved rural village centre retain their original design. The shared rural heritage also includes a threshing floor, wells, a basin and a livestock watering trough. The village landscape therefore includes not only individual buildings, but also communal features of rural everyday life. At the parish church of Outeiro, the bell tower stands in the churchyard opposite the façade of the church building. This arrangement gives the church a distinctive architectural feature.

The Silha da Portela da Fairra is an archaic protective structure for beehives: a small, usually circular stone wall protects them from domestic and wild animals. Here, form and function are closely linked. The Fojo da Portela da Fairra is a wolf trap of the “fojo de cabrita” type, with approximately circular granite walls.

Local Economy and Fishing

Smoked meats and crafts are complementary activities in the local economy. They broaden the picture of Outeiro to include local livelihoods alongside its landscape and architectural heritage.

Another connection to Albufeira de Paradela is the regulated zone for recreational and sport fishing. Part of this zone covers 76.83 hectares and lies in the Freguesia of Outeiro and the União das Freguesias of Paradela, Contim and Fiães in the Concelho of Montalegre. The figure of 76.83 hectares applies to this part of the zone, not to the entire body of water. If you plan to fish there, check the regulations and licence requirements currently in force beforehand.
